AUCKLAND, Aug 31 AAP - Shaun Johnson says there's still plenty of improvements in his game despite producing a quick-fire hat-trick as the Warriors kept their NRL season alive.

Johnson dotted down three times in the space of seven second-half minutes to help the home side overwhelm Canberra 50-16 in Auckland.

The halfback finished with a haul of 26 points after also banging over seven goals.

Johnson was one of three players to score a hat-trick in the match, along with teammate Manu Vatuvei and Canberra centre Jarrod Croker.

"I guess I was in the right place at the right time," he said.

"It's something I have been trying to work on, pushing on the other side of the ruck and giving myself a chance to make a play."

Johnson produced his trademark footwork and speed to score his opening try nine minutes into the second half.

His second came via a 70m intercept, while he chased his own grubber ahead for his third.

He then laid on the pass for skipper Simon Mannering to get on the scoresheet as well as the Warriors racked up nine tries.

But Johnson admitted he was frustrated at being "just a passenger" in the first half, when he also threw a loose pass that led to Crocker sprinting 80 metres to dot down.

"Personally, if I didn't score those three tries, I probably would have had a dud game," he said.

"There's still a lot I need to work on."

Johnson said the same applied to the team as a whole ahead of their final-round must-win match against St George Illawarra.

"We have to be better."
