BRADFORD, England, July 19 AP - The debt-ridden Bradford Bulls have received a formal bid from a group of local businessmen, the only serious rescuers left for the famous British rugby league club.

The offer on Thursday was conditional on the new owners being able to buy back the lease of the Bulls' stadium and the club retaining their Super League status, said Brendan Guilfoyle, the administrator leading attempts to avoid liquidating the club.

Guilfoyle put the club in bankruptcy on June 26 because of unpaid taxes of STG300,000 ($A456,000) and has extended the deadline to find a buyer to July 27.

He said the prospective owners call themselves the ABC consortium, and include an Indian restaurant owner and local property developers.

"The next few days are going to be critical for the club," he said.

The English Rugby Football League bought the stadium lease in January for STG1.25 million ($A1.90 million) to safeguard its future as a league venue, and will decide on Friday the Bulls' points penalty for going into bankruptcy.

That also cost the club its three-year Super League licence, which will only be renewed when the RFL talk further with the ABC consortium about its intentions.

The Bulls are sixth in the 14-team league, and the other clubs will also have a say.

Since the Bulls went into administration they have won both of their games, including over league-leading Wigan.

Officials and coaches lost their jobs but coach Mick Potter and his staff returned voluntarily.

The players also received their July wages when the RFL agreed to advance the club its share of television income.

Bradford meets neighbour Leeds on Friday, with Leeds donating all money from away ticket sales to the Bulls.

Bradford have won four Super League titles since 1996, and the world club championship three times.
