MELBOURNE, Aug 10 AAP - Gold Coast overcame the loss of two key players to take a 10-0 lead at halftime over Melbourne in their NRL clash at AAMI Park.

The Titans, desperate to break into the top eight, outplayed their highly-fancied rivals and scored two opening-half tries to dominate the exchange.

Prop Luke Bailey hopped from the field just eight minutes into the match after suffering an Achilles injury and was ruled out for the remainder of the game.

Titans lock Ashley Harrison was also a first half casualty, departing midway through the half with what appeared to be a hip problem.

Exciting fullback William Zillman was also a late withdrawal with a slight sternum injury.

The Storm looked like they were back in form when they snapped their five-game losing streak last round but Gold Coast proved a much tougher proposition than lowly Penrith.

The home side didn't help themselves with some poor ball handling in the wet and slippery conditions.

Mahe Fonua became the first Victorian player to make his first grade debut when he was called in for winger Anthony Quinn and he had a nightmare opening 20 minutes.

The 19-year-old dropped the ball with his first touch three minutes into the game, was caught out of position to hand the Titans their first try through centre Steve Michaels, and then spilt a simple Billy Slater pass.

The youngster was targeted by Gold Coast, with their second try coming after a kick to his side.

Fonua wasn't able to secure the ball in the air and in the ensuing play reserve forward Ben Ridge burrowed across the tryline from dummy half.

Storm centre Justin O'Neill also suffered a knee injury but remained on the field with coach Craig Bellamy reluctant to call on his bench full of forwards.
