FC coach Peter Gentle admitted his squad had given him a selection headache following the 26-6 victory over Castleford in their first pre-season friendly.

The Black and Whites ran in tries from Ben Crooks, Josh Bowden, Aaron Heremaia, Joe Westerman and Shannon McDonnell in an impressive performance at the KC Stadium in Kirk Yeaman's testimonial match.

It saw the club's youngsters seize their chance to impress as they opened up a 10-6 lead at the break, before a more senior line-up featuring six of the club's new signings took charge in the second half.

And with plans to whittle down his squad to around 20 players for next week's friendly against Hull KR, Gentle said he was pleased to see such strong competition for places.

"We've got some decisions to make there as I thought the younger players did a really good job for us in the first half," the Black and Whites boss told www.hullfc.com

"I'm reluctant to call them a second string team as there was some experience in that side too. The likes of Josh Bowden, Chris Green and Ben Crooks have all played first grade now and it bodes well for the strength in depth we have this season.

"It was evident there in the first half that they can compete at this level and they gave us a really good platform that the second side were able to capitalise on after the break.

"We'll look to field a squad around the 20-player mark next week, but we've come through relatively unscathed with only Richard Whiting picking up a concussion."

Gentle added, "We've got a fair bit to work on with our attack. At times we gelled and looked good and at times our structures broke down, which is going to happen at this time of year so we aren't concerned about that.

"Everybody got a good hit out which was the aim of fielding two teams and we can now concentrate on our next friendly and more importantly the start of Super League."
