Wigan Warriors out-of-contract winger Anthony Gelling has been ruled out for three months with a broken collarbone.

The Cook Islands international, who sustained the injury in the Warriors' 46-6 Super League victory against Salford City Reds last Friday, had scans over the weekend and was told he could be out for around 14 weeks.

Gelling, who is hoping to press his claim for a new contract, was making his first appearance since recovering from a knee injury.

Wigan coach Shaun Wane also fears scrum-half Matty Smith could be facing a spell on the sidelines after picking up a shoulder injury in the same game.

"We won't know the extent of Matty's shoulder problem until the swelling goes down," said Wane, whose table-topping side face Hull KR in the fifth round of the Challenge Cup on Sunday. "We'll have a better idea later in the week.

"But Gells will probably be out for about 14 weeks. It's a blow for him but he will come back stronger and, in the meantime, it provides an opportunity for someone else."
