WELLINGTON, Aug 15 AAP - Experienced hooker Nathan Friend has achieved his wish of staying at the Warriors beyond this NRL season after signing a one-year extension.

Friend, 32, will play his third year at the Auckland club in 2014. It will be his 14th season in the NRL following stints at Brisbane, Melbourne and the Gold Coast.

"While we looked at other options, this is where I wanted to be all along. I couldn't be happier staying with this club," Friend said.

"It's also where we want to be as a family. We love it in Auckland and now we can really look forward to staying on."

Toowoomba-born bricklayer Friend missed the first three games of this season following shoulder surgery but will make his 18th consecutive appearance when the Warriors host Penrith on Sunday. It will be his 170th NRL game.

Coach Matthew Elliott says retaining the diminutive hooker with the consistently high tackle count was important for both on and off-field reasons due to his experience and attitude.

Elliott also praised Friend for not letting the contract negotiations affect his form in recent weeks, which he said had been excellent.
