WREXHAM, Wales, Nov 16 AAP - Brett Morris and Jarryd Hayne were thrilled to share a slice of Kangaroos history on Saturday despite falling just short of individual glory.

Playing next to each other on Australia's right-hand side, Morris and Hayne scored four tries apiece in a 62-0 Rugby League World Cup thrashing of the United States in Wrexham as both matched a Kangaroos record in Test match rugby league.

The duo joined an elite list of Australians to score four tries in a Test, becoming the seventh and eighth players to do so and the first in 13 years.

No Australia player has achieved the feat since Wendell Sailor, Mat Rogers and Gorden Tallis did so in 2000.

John Ribot (1982), Dale Shearer (1986) and Michael O'Connor (1988) also share the record.

St George-Illawarra winger Morris scored his four tries in the space of 18 first-half minutes, raising hopes he could become the first Kangaroos player to score five times in Test.

But he couldn't add to his tally after halftime, despite light-heartedly urging Hayne to give him the ball.

"Moz (Morris) knew (about the record)," Hayne said.

"After halftime he was trying to get me to give him the ball as quick as I could.

"He almost got five but it was called back for a forward pass. He came close but it wasn't to be.

"... For Moz to get four as well makes it that much more special for me."

Parramatta star Hayne, a surprise selection at right centre ahead of specialists including Brent Tate, Josh Morris and Michael Jennings, scored Australia's first try and last three.

He was also instrumental in setting up Morris for several tries in the first half and could perhaps have threatened the outright record himself had he been more selfish.

Hayne said it was his first haul of four tries since doing so as an 18-year-old with Parramatta in 2006.

Morris has achieved the feat once at NRL level and playing for local club Kiama as a teenager.

"It doesn't happen often though and you have to pinch yourself when it does happen," said Morris, whose four tries included one brilliant 60 metre solo effort.

"To share it with Jarryd is a huge achievement."
