AUCKLAND, Feb 15 AAP - Not long after making his NRL comeback after 10 seasons away from rugby league, Brad Fittler was limping around with a big lump of ice on his thigh but the Sydney Roosters legend still had a smile on his face.

Fittler received the loudest cheer of the day at Saturday's inaugural Auckland Nines, apart from that reserved for the home-town Warriors, when introduced before the third game of the day, the Roosters clash with Parramatta.

And the two-time premiership winner didn't disappoint, displaying his trademark sidestep, tossing a series of his spiral passes left and right and making a series of heavy tackles despite his 42-years of age.

"It was great to be out there, playing at Eden Park," Fittler said.

"I've never played here before. It was fantastic to run out, I've out seen plenty of Bledisloe Cups."

Sport never cedes to anyone's desires and it was no different for Fittler whose comeback ended the same way his first grade career did. With a loss, Sam Radradra scoring three tries as Parramatta defeated the Roosters 18-11.

"It's great to have this, it's a great initiative," Fittler said.

"I felt a lot better running out than I did running back.

"But it is fantastic, it's a great game and I can't give the NRL a big enough wrap.

"For the players to be running out there it is a huge buzz."
