SYDNEY, Aug 9 AAP - Parramatta lead Wests Tigers 14-10 in the NRL's battle of the basement at Parramatta Stadium on Friday night.

The Tigers opened the scoring after seven minutes through David Nofoaluma's eighth try of an excellent debut season.

It was the joint venture's first real attack of the game after repelling two efforts from the Eels who almost crossed through Ken Sio and Ben Roberts in a mistake-laden opening period.

However Ricky Stuart's side, who are attempting to avoid an 11th straight defeat, responded well to their early setback with Sio and Jake Mullaney crossing in quick succession.

Jarryd Hayne, back in the side after over two months on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, played a part in both tries and the Eels looked far more menacing in attack as a result of his return.

Ricky Stuart should have extended their advantage midway through the opening stanza when Roberts got his hands to a Benji Marshall grubber kick and broke free, only to produce an appalling pass to undo all of his good work and cough up the ball.

And just shy of the half-hour mark the Tigers regained the lead through the lightning-fast Marika Koroibete with Marshall adding the extras.

But the Eels gave their long-suffering fans something to cheer on the stroke of halftime when Vai Toutai finished in the left corner after more good work from Hayne.
