SYDNEY, Feb 28 AAP - St George Illawarra are investigating an alleged incident involving one of their players that led to a 26-year-old man being taken to hospital suffering from a head wound on Thursday.

The NRL club have informed the code's integrity unit of the situation where members of their squad are reported to have been involved in an altercation at the Illawarra Hotel in Wollongong at 10.20pm.

Dragons officials remained tight-lipped when contacted by AAP but later issued a brief statement confirming they were aware of the situation and looking into what happened.

Police are yet to lay any charges but it's a distraction the Dragons could do without with the new season starting on Sunday week against Wests Tigers.

A spokesman confirmed two men were involved in an altercation at a licensed premises on Keira Street shortly and a man was taken to Wollongong Hospital with eye and cheek injuries.

Steve Price's side have had a troubled build-up to the new season and were hammered 38-20 by South Sydney in last week's Charity Shield.

A casualty from that match was star playmaker Josh Dugan, who has been ruled out for five weeks with a knee injury.

An NRL spokesman said the integrity unit would wait to find out more information from the club about the incident and see if police take any action.

The news comes just four days after NRL chief Dave Smith announced record profits of almost $50m and claimed the game is placed to become the most played sport in the country.

Smith has made no secret of his desire to come down hard on players who break the law insisting he wants to make the game more family friendly.

Last year he stood down NSW prop James Tamou for State of Origin game two and fined the Test star $20,000 after he was caught four times over the legal limit and without a driving licence.
