SYDNEY, April 19 AAP - Gareth Widdop admits St George Illawarra's NRL season would have been in danger had they not beaten the Warriors on Saturday at Kogarah Oval.

After a storming start to the year in which the Dragons won their opening three matches, Steve Price's side then slumped to 3-3 for the season and were reeling after Melbourne's victory on Monday from a try scored after the siren.

The joint-venture face the Sydney Roosters in Friday's Anzac Day clash at Allianz Stadium then have tough away trips to in-form Parramatta and South Sydney.

Widdop said it was a must-win game against the enigmatic Warriors.

"It was a massive win for us," Widdop said.

"To get a win tonight after that loss in Melbourne was really important as I think we would have been a real dent to our confidence had we lost."

The England international said it took him a few days to get over the Melbourne game having been so close to beating his former club in a match he played in front of his friends and family in his adopted home city.

"To play such a strong Melbourne side and go so close was hugely disappointing," he said.

"We didn't deserve to lose that game, but we've put it behind us now and we can move on to the next game against the Roosters."
