Bowen, whose parents and partner were in the big crowd, said when he picked the ball up at the back of the scrum his only option was to run.

"I got a bit of a shock when I looked up and saw the gap open," said the birthday boy who has scored some spectacular tries in his career.

Cowboys skipper Johnathan Thurston, who along with his teammates had copped a bagging after last weekend's abysmal loss to the Gold Coast, said he had an enormous sense of relief as he watched Bowen sprint to the line.

"I just felt relief. After what we copped during the week, after last week's performance," said Thurston.

"We still weren't great, but we found a way to win.

"Mango (Bowen) has that special ability to be able to do that and it was a huge relief to get the two points."

Brisbane coach Anthony Griffin said he players hadn't been prepared to work hard enough defensively.

"We were very poor defensively tonight," he said.

"Some bad decisions and lack of effort."
