A knee injury has forced North Queensland starting hooker Aaron Payne out of the NRL semi-final against Manly at Allianz Stadium on Friday night.

Payne, who is in his final season in the NRL, suffered a cartilage tear in the opening 10 minutes of the elimination final against Brisbane and has been ruled out for the rest of the finals series.

As he did in the week one final against Manly last year, James Segeyaro is likely start at hooker for North Queensland against Manly, while Anthony Mitchell is penciled in to return to the 17 in the back-up hooker/halfback role.

The Cowboys headed south today with a squad of 18 with back-rower Joel Riethmuller expected to again be the player who misses out as 18th man.

The winner tomorrow night will face Melbourne Park in the preliminary final at AAMI Park in Melbourne next Friday night.
