TOWNSVILLE, Qld, June 8 AAP - North Queensland halfback Robert Lui picked up the playmaking duties in the absence of Johnathan Thurston to help the Cowboys head into halftime at 12-12 in their NRL clash with Canterbury in Townsville.

Lui twice played backrower Glenn Hall into space in the final 12 minutes of the half to set up tries for Brent Tate and Dallas Johnson in reply to Ben Barba's opening four-pointer in the 22nd minute.

Injured State of Origin star Thurston was one of four game-day changes to the Cowboys side after not recovering in time from a groin injury.

Winger Ash Graham and hooker Rory Kostjasyn were also ruled out through injury, while Blake Leary was added to the bench.

The Bulldogs made a handful of changes of their own, with Origin players Josh Morris and Josh Reynolds coming back into the team along with Tony Williams.

Both sides struggled for ascendancy early through multiple handling errors, but the game came alive in the final 20 minutes.

The pair of tries appeared to put the Cowboys on top but Barba helped swing the momentum back his team's way, beating Michael Morgan with a dummy and skipping across the line with three minutes left in the half.
