SYDNEY, Sept 25 AAP - Ron Coote, the man who won premierships with South Sydney and the Roosters - two teams vying for this year's NRL title - is set to be inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

The rugby league icon will be among six new names added to the list of sporting greats on October 10.

Rated one of the game's greatest lock forwards, Coote played in nine grand finals for six victories between 1965 and 1975.

He won four premierships at the Rabbitohs - including their most recent in 1971 - and back-to-back titles at (the then) Eastern Suburbs.

Coote played 259 club games, plus 23 Tests and World Cup matches for Australia.

The 68-year-old also founded the Men of League support program for players, officials and referees.

NRL chief executive Dave Smith said Coote would stand as one of the most inspirational figures in the game's history.

"He was a legend as a player, a man his teammates looked to as solid simply because he would never let anyone down," Smith said.

"That strength of character has carried on as Ron used his business skills to reach out to those who had fallen on tough times through the establishment of the Men of League Foundation."
