SYDNEY, May 31 AAP - NSW will have a chance to send veteran chief executive Geoff Carr out a winner when the State of Origin series begins on Wednesday.

Carr announced on Friday that he would be standing down as NSWRL CEO in October, ending a 25-year career in sports administration.

He said the ideal way to celebrate his time at the top was to see the Blues wrest back control in the annual state battle, starting with game one at ANZ Stadium.

"I've loved every moment but everything has its time," Carr said in a statement.

"I hope to see the Blues win back the State of Origin series this year and make room for someone else.

"I won't be looking for another fulltime role in sport but will certainly be going to a lot of footy."

The former St George player and chief executive also spent a decade as the NSWRL general manager and was also CEO of the ARL for 12 years, before ending that role in 2011.

NSWRL chairman George Peponis said Carr carried enormous respect throughout the rugby league community.

"He is someone who has been involved at every level of the code and who has earned an enormous level of respect," Peponis said.

"Through the many challenges and triumphs the game has faced, Geoff has always been someone that people could talk to and who would put the game ahead of everything else."
