Halifax hooker Phil Cantillon will captain Ireland in their opening game of the European Nations Cup this Sunday against Scotland in Glasgow, kick off 2pm.

Cantillon, who signed for Halifax this week after four seasons at Widnes, was appointed captain by coach Daryl Powell and he will lead Ireland in both games, this Sunday's and their second pool game against France on Saturday 1st November at Dalymount Park, Dublin, kick off 5pm.

The team includes six survivors from the last Test against France in 2001 and eleven of the squad played in Super League last season. There are full debuts for Oldham's Phil Farrell, Lee Doran and Neil Doran, plus Barrow's James King, Dean Gaskell from Warrington and Wakefield's Paul Handforth plus Cantillon.

Commenting on his appointment Cantillon, who qualifies to play for Ireland through his Tipperary born grandfather, said, “It is a real honour to be asked to captain Ireland and it will be a really proud moment for me and my family when I lead the side out. We have come together well in the past couple of days and there is a real enthusiasm from all the lads to do the best we can.

“We have some talented, young blokes in the squad who will thrive on the chance to play international rugby and I'm sure it will be an experience we will all remember,” added the 27-year-old.
