CANBERRA, April 30 AAP - Canberra captain Terry Campese will return to the starting line-up at five-eighth for the first time in over a year as his side prepares for their NRL clash with the undefeated Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park on Saturday.

Halfback Sam Williams is the victim of Campese's return to the starting side, with coach David Furner dropping the 22-year-old from the squad to work on his defence in the Mounties NSW Cup team.

"He's disappointed, because it's something that he's had to work hard on and I've just felt that Josh McCrone is probably a little bit stronger a defender," Furner said.

However Furner said he could still recall Williams if McCrone failed to overcome a groin injury and utility reserve Anthony Milford unsuccessfully appealed a bizarre grade three tackle charge he picked up while playing for the Raiders' NYC team against the Cowboys last Saturday.

Milford was defending metres off his try line when he moved forward and took a low cover position in front of a rampaging Cowboys forward, catapulting him over the top of himself using his back and shoulders.

"If anything it bordered on clumsy and probably put himself in a position there that wasn't that great," Furner said.

"It's a strange one because no one has ever seen a tackle like it. How it was graded, a grade three, that's what we're looking at contesting and hopefully common sense prevails and we can get it downgraded."

Meanwhile, goal-kicking centre Jarrod Croker has been ruled out for three to five weeks after scans revealed a small tear in the medial ligament of his left knee.

Jack Wighton will move in from the wing to replace Croker in the centres, with winger Sandor Earl returning to the side and Reece Robinson to take over kicking duties.

Interchange Joel Thompson has been ruled out of the match with a toe injury (one to two weeks) and will be replaced by Joe Picker.

Raiders: Reece Robinson, Sandor Earl, Jack Wighton, Blake Ferguson, Edrick Lee, Terry Campese (capt), Josh McCrone, Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, Matt McIlwrick, Brett White, Joel Edwards, Jake Foster, Shaun Fensom. Interchange: Anthony Milford, Joe Picker, Dane Tilse, Paul Vaughan, Jarrad Kennedy, Shaun Berrigan (two to be omitted).
