SYDNEY, June 15 AAP - Sonny Bill Williams returns to face his old NRL club at their home venue for the first time on Friday night.

But it's payback for a thumping the Sydney Roosters handed out earlier this year that is on Canterbury five-eighth Josh Reynolds' mind.

The Bulldogs' 32-30 golden-point win over Manly on Friday night made it seven victories from eight games since their dreadful 1-5 start to the season.

With several key players fit and in form after missing the early rounds, the Bulldogs are poised to continue their surge.

Last year's grand finalists are within two points of the fourth-place Sea Eagles on the ladder, with Williams' Roosters next up.

The code hopper will receive a torrid reception at ANZ Stadium, as the Canterbury faithful confront the man who walked out on the club in 2008.

But Reynolds, who made his NRL debut in 2011, says it's more about making amends for his side's 38-0 loss to the Roosters in round six this year.

"It's going to be a massive game. The boys want to get them back for what they did to us," Reynolds told AAP.

"We really want to make sure, because they touched us up last time and it's not a good feeling.

"To beat the Roosters (going) into the bye, that's a couple of good wins on the trot."

Bulldogs coach Des Hasler typically downplayed his team's surge.

Asked if the Bulldogs were back after their early-season slump, Hasler said "no".

Questioned if it was the Bulldogs' best performance of the year, Hasler offered the straightest of straight bats.

"It's a win, we're not going to get carried away with it. We had five tries posted against us," he said.

"It's only the halfway point through the season, we're in the middle of Origin.

"The biggest obstacle in the way is us.

'We've got to come to terms with what we can do.

"We've got to start realising that and getting it on."
