NEWCASTLE, NSW, Aug 2 AAP - Brisbane recovered from a sloppy start to lead Newcastle 12-6 at halftime in their must-win NRL match at Hunter Stadium.

Languishing in 12th spot, four points adrift of the top eight, the Broncos were fighting to keep their finals hopes flickering.

But the signs didn't look good when Knights prop Zane Tetevano scored the easiest of tries from a short kick by skipper Jarrod Mullen in just the third minute.

Tyrone Roberts' conversion made it 6-0.

But the Broncos dominated the remainder of the half.

Test centre Justin Hodges dummied and sliced his way through to score in the 13th minute, with Scott Prince adding the extras to lock the game up.

Hodges was over again shortly after, only to be held up by Knights centre Joey Leilua.

A trysaving tackle from Roberts on runaway back-rower turned winger Corey Oates denied the Broncos again, but there was no stopping lock Corey Parker from crossing for his first try since 2011 four minutes before the break.

Running a great line off a long pass from halfback Ben Hunt, Parker stepped Beau Scott and charged over the top of fullback Darius Boyd to touch down next to the posts.

Prince's second conversion gave the Broncos a six-pointer buffer at the interval.
