Brisbane Second Division wins XXXX Statewide Challenge

Second Division achieved its highest honour in its 36 years on Sunday 10 June when the Shane Kiss coached team defeated the current Foley Shield holders, Cairns, 58-14 in Cairns.

Brisbane started quickly with three tries to captain Steven Franciscus and tries to Nathan Riedy and Shaun Rees in the first half, while Kieran Turner kicked five goals. The team was also called on to defend well as Cairns scored tries by Rickki Sutherland and Justin Castellaro and a goal by Chris Riesen. Brisbane led 30 10 at the break.

Cairns started the second half strongly and again Brisbane was called on for some solid defence. Hayden Topliss scored for Cairns and Brisbane led 30-14.

Brisbane then got on top with a further try to Shaun Rees as well as tries to Logan Bowden, Anton Wickens, Nathan Riedy and Mitchell Evenden. Kieran Turner kicked another four goals for Brisbane to win the match 58-14, scoring ten tries to three overall. Riedy's try in the second half was his second for the match.

Nathan Riedy was named Player of the Match.

Brisbane Second Division 58 (Steven Franciscus 3, Shaun Rees 2, Nathan Riedy 2, Logan Bowden, Anton Wickens and Mitchell Evenden tries, and Kieran Turner 9 goals) beat Cairns 14 (Rickki Sutherland, Justin Castellaro and Hayden Topliss tries, Chris Riesen 1 goal).
