SYDNEY, May 8 AAP - Brett Stewart will miss the opening game of the State or Origin series next month after scans showed a back injury was more serious than first thought.

Manly coach Geoff Toovey revealed on Wednesday that fullback Stewart would be out of action for at least a month after secondary scans showed a small bone chip in his back.

That means he's certain to be unavailable for NSW in the opening Origin game against Queensland in Sydney on June 5.

Stewart suffered the injury when he copped a knee to his back in the last minute of the first half against St George Illawarra on Monday night.

He was initially named in the Manly team to play the Sydney Roosters in the upcoming round after preliminary scans had proved inconclusive.
