GOLD COAST, May 7 AAP - Greg Bird sees a lot he likes in Josh Reynolds and has backed the Canterbury five-eighth in the race for NSW's No.6 jersey for this year's State of Origin series.

Reynolds made his Origin debut off the bench in last year's second match, won by Queensland 26-6.

Sydney Rooster James Maloney played as the Blues' starting five-eighth for that match, as he did for the entire series last year.

A poor start to 2014 and a shoulder injury has put Maloney's position under question, with many believing NSW coach Laurie Daley should opt for South Sydney's John Sutton, Reynolds or Newcastle's Jarrod Mullen instead.

Reynolds and Mullen faced off in last weekend's City v Country clash, with Reynolds scoring a try in the 26-26 draw while Mullen kicked a 40-20 and had a hand in one of Country's tries.

Bird, a near-certainty to be part of the Blues' squad, said if he's fit Maloney would most likely be picked due to his status as the incumbent and his combination with likely halfback Mitchell Pearce.

But if Daley decides to make a change, there's no debate in Bird's mind who should get the No.6 jersey.

"The standout five-eighth of the year is Joshie Reynolds," Bird said.

"He's topping every stat and he's a rugby league player. He's not all about skill, speed, strength and size.

"He's tenacious, aggressive and that's what you love to see in those sorts of arenas."

This year's Origin series gets underway on May 28.
