Queensland hooker Cameron Smith been ruled out of Wednesday's opening match of the Harvey Norman State of Origin series.

Smith will be replaced by Manly's Matt Ballin in the starting side.

Ballin has edged out Nathan Friend and Aaron Payne for the dummy half position, which has been Smith's for the past 19 origin matches.

The last hooker prior to Smith was Michael Crocker in game two of the 2003 series.

Smith was injured in Australia's 12-8 Test victory on Friday 7th May and the Queensland medical staff have decided the injury won't heal in time.

Meanwhile, NSW will be 1-17 with Timana Tahu being passed fit to play.

There's still plenty of tickets available for the opening match to be played at ANZ Stadium in Homebush Bay.
