BARLA to offer a new League to North West clubs

When the four season's debate came along some months ago BARLA committed itself to supporting its member clubs.
All rugby league participating clubs and leagues were offered an alternative playing season to the traditional September to May, of which some clubs and leagues accepted and some didn't.
The leagues of North West Counties U13's - U15's and U16's - U18's accepted the new playing season after a vote by its members and at the end of 2011 switched to a mainly summer orientated programme.
What was clear when the votes were cast was that not everyone was in favour of change and the figures reflected that on balance in the North West Counties between the age groups from U13 - U18's that 60% of the clubs were in favour, and 30% were against with some abstentions. We think it is common knowledge that the junior and youth leagues have suffered somewhat with an intermittent playing programme which has resonated into weeks on end of no games, a slack competition and a friendly play as you can system with no one wanting to play.
BARLA have subsequently been approached by several of its members from the North West Counties to see if there is an opportunity to return to a more traditional season. Given the cause for concern our members have shown, we are now seeking expressions of interest from teams and clubs at U13 - U18's which may want to return to a traditional September to May season. BARLA, with the aid of seasoned volunteers, will facilitate this league.
BARLA are still committed to promoting the Community Board policy and still endorse a summer based programme, however it is imperative that we listen to what our members are advising us, and wish for them to be happy and committed in whichever season they want to participate. Both BARLA and the RFL understand that there is no "one season suits all."
Should your club be interested in this venture please return your expression of interest to Roger Fagge, BARLA administrator, by the close of business Friday 24th August and if enough interest is shown we will actively seek to formulate a new league with a competition programme to start in October/November 2012.
