The BARLA Greta Britain Cougars journey was well rewarded with a hard earned and at times physical victory over the Royal Navy.

The Cougars had a few injuries during the game and Chris Penrose (Skirlaugh) who took the ball in well throughout the game will be returning home minus one front tooth.

In an outstanding team effort the Cougars captain Davey Jones (West Bank Bears) led by example giving a man of the match display with his tackling, busts, scoring a try, having one disallowed and creating two tries for his side. Jack Ridsdill (West Hull) and Danny Lynch (Pilkington Recs) ran him very close for the award.

The Royal Navy gave their all and showed why they have had great success in the early rounds of this year's Carnegie Challenge Cup captain Mark Robinson put in a swashbuckling man of the match performance for his side.

The Cougars pressured the Navy defence from kick off and Chris Warren (Millom) ran a great angle on 3 minutes to burst the defence and score and Lynch added the extra s for a 6-0 lead.

The Navy struggled to withstand the tackling from the Cougars and on 15 minutes Jones split the Navy down the left hand side to score, Lynch missed the conversion 10-0 to the Cougars.

On 24 minutes Ridsdill pressured the naval attack forcing an error to which he latched on to sprint 40 yards and score, Lynch added the extras to make it 16-0 to the Cougars.

On the half hour the Cougars Jones galloped 95 yards after a Danny Morrow (Walney Central) tackle released the ball only for opposite linesman to disallow the try.

On 34 minutes the Navy capitalised on some weak Cougar defence and Kev Botwood scored and Wayne John kicked the goal to make it 16-6 at the break.

12 minutes into the second half Morrow raced 40 metres down the right hand side brushing off defenders to score in the corner to make it 20-6 as Lynch missed the goal from the touchline.

On 56 minutes the big Fijian centre Silvinusi Buinamassi crashed over in the corner and John's conversion made it 20-12.

62 minutes into the game some good running from Jones put Gary Conroy (Widnes St Maries) over in the corner, Lynch missed the goal to make it 24-12.

A Navy kick through on 65 minutes saw Buinamassi pick up and cross the line, John missed the crucial goal making it 24-16 to the Cougars.

Jones again teased the Navy line before slipping the ball to Adam Masson (Shaw Cross Sharks) who scored in the corner to make it 28-16 to the Cougars as Clayton Sutton's (Egremont Rangers) goal fell short.

On 72 minutes prop Jack Sutherland (Barrow Island) crossed the line and this time Danny Sayle (Dalton) was successful with the kick to make it 34-16 for the visitors.

Four minutes from time a Jones big hit released the ball for Lynch to race 30 yards and give it to Conroy to score his second, Sayle missed the kick to close the game out 38-16.
