A bronze statue of Beetson - Queensland's inaugural Origin skipper - was unveiled in front of hundreds of Queensland fans.
Lewis, who played alongside Beetson in that very first Origin match in 1980, spoke passionately about his legacy.
"A wonderful man, a wonderful rugby league player, and I can honestly say that I felt privileged to have known the man who has boosted Queensland Rugby League and its success rate more than any other person despite playing just one game in the Maroon colours," Lewis said.
"Arthur, it was a privilege to know you."
Meninga and current Queensland skipper Cameron Smith officially unveiled the statue in front of a big media contingent and members of the Beetson family.
The rest of the Maroons squad was also on hand for the moving Beetson tribute, which will no doubt arm them with added motivation heading into tomorrow's Origin decider.
