Third placed Northcote had the home advantage over sixth placed Manukau at Birkenhead War Memorial to open the fifth round of the Mad Butcher Fox Memorial Trophy. Both teams were aggressive in defence with neither team given an inch.

Northcote's prop Peter Wharton played a powerful roll in the defence of home team but was matched by his opposite in Manukau's Anthony Tuiletufuga. Other players to perform were Northcote's centre Pat Thompson and Manukau's standoff half Tristin Waipouri.

Unfortunately, both teams' hard work resulted in an 18 all draw that was the second for each of the two teams. With both teams making late attempts at drop goals in the dying seconds that went wide.

In an ironic twist both of these teams' draws were against Richmond, who was playing the undefeated Ellerslie at Ellerslie Domain today. With Richmond's current form they would find the going hard against the best defensive teams so far this year but they were one of only three teams to beat Ellerslie in the Mad Butcher Grading Round.

However, Ellerslies time was up and their winning streak at an end with Richmond inflicting a 36-28 defeat of the competition leaders. Richmond's props in Jade Tiniteila and Taetafa Taua'a had strong games as well as standoff half Matthew Tuisamoa who returned to the Mad Butcher Fox Memorial team.

Ellerslie's Alec Leulu and Uliti Uilou had strong games and it will be interesting to see how Ellerslie react next week after conceding their first loss.

Sunday's games at Carlaw Park saw bottom placed Te Atatu play the resurgent Ponsonby as well as Pt Chevalier playing taking on the mighty Otahuhu.

With Ponsonby having won their last two games they were looking to stay in the top four ahead of Richmond. Both teams started well and were close at the break. Ponsonby pulled away to lead 22-14 going into the last quarter with taking a penalty to draw them within 6 points with 10 minute to go.

Te Atatu then scored out wide in the last minute through right winger Daniel Waitai and needed the difficult conversion to draw the game. Unfortunately their kicker Adrian Tawhiti was unable to convert the try leaving Ponsonby the victors 22-20.

Ponsonby's stand out player was their standoff half Akuila Vetenibua who landed two conversions and the deciding penalty goal.

In the main game of the day Pt Chevalier looked to cause an upset with an early try through their prop Hutch Maiava in the tenth minute. From there on in it was a seesawing affair with Otahuhu taking a half time lead of 20-16.

In the second half Pt Chevalier lost Daniel Daniel in the sin bin for holding down a player. Otahuhu looked to capitalise with a quick restart but failed to convert their advantage in points.

This turned out to be the story of the second half with both teams dropping the ball at crucial times or with the line open. Otahuhu's left wing Moses Fetalaiga finally broke the points scoring deadlock to final seal the match in the last minute.

Point Chevalier's Casey Finnerty did all he could in the second half to bring up points for his side. But decisive running by Otahuhu second rower Tepa Frost cut the advantage made by Pt Chevalier.
