This weekend the Wynnum Manly Football Club team will celebrate their victory 30 years ago.
This will be a memorable event for the Wynnum Manly community, with the Annual Sports Dinner taking place on the Saturday night followed by the players reunion on the Sunday, when Wynnum Manly take on Souths Logan at Kougari Oval.
Wynnum Manly had a long wait for premiership success, 31 years in fact, with our home team bringing home the BRL Premiership for the very first time, defeating Souths 17-3 in front of a capacity Lang Park crowd of 36, 000.
Businesses in the district went mad in the week leading up to the Grand Final, with shop fronts dressed up throughout the Wynnum Manly region. You could purchase red and green bread, sausages, scones and neenish tarts just to name a few.
Our team was the talk of the town. No other event had ever brought this tight knit community so close.
Sunday night after our premiership victory, a stage was erected on the ground at Kougari Oval, with a crowd of 10, 000 on the field, the club itself had to close the doors due to overcrowding. Celebrations continued into the following week, with half the Wynnum Manly community utilising their sick or annual leave.
The Wynnum Manly side comprised of several Wynnum household names such as Gary Seaton, Brett French, David Green and along with the likes of Colin Scott, Terry Butler, Brian Walsh, Shaun Johnson, Mark Zillman, Brian Walsh, Peter Dawes, Brian Battese and Warren Green assembled a formidable side on that day.
Wynnum Manly had two players from this side selected on the 1982 Kangaroo tour in Gene Miles and Rod Morris. They were to become Wynnum Manly's 5th and 6th Australian representatives.
1982 the year never to be forgotten.
There are limited tables left for the 1982 Wynnum Manly Rugby League sports dinner.
Our special guest will be Trevor Gillmiester and tickets can be purchased by contacting Scott Thornton on 3393 3482.
