Rd 1 : Roosters V Souths

THE Roosters and Channel 9 have set the ambitious targets of a sell-out crowd and Origin-like ratings for the season opener against South Sydney.

Superb trial match victories for the Rabbitohs in the Charity Shield and the Roosters in the Foundation Cup have set the scene for a huge start to the NRL season at Allianz Stadium on March 7.

The anticipation surrounding the match had already been heightened because of Sonny Bill Williams' first game in the NRL for five years, but the sudden emergence of the Roosters as premiership threats has ramped up the hype.

Often ridiculed for their modest crowd numbers, there is an expectation the Roosters faithful will turn up en masse, potentially filling the 42,000-seat stadium after a 27 per cent increase in membership.

"This isn't a game where people should walk up and buy a ticket," Roosters chief operating officer Ted Helliar said last night. "We've got an increase in membership, and have reciprocal rights with the Rabbitohs. Ticket sales are starting to really move. We want this to be a sell-out."

Nine boss and Roosters powerbroker David Gyngell has invested heavily in Williams' return to the game, with the network rolling out new promos last night positioning the controversial footballer-boxer as the "lone wolf" of rugby league.

Last year's golden-point season opener between the Dragons and the Knights - in Wayne Bennett's first match at the helm in Newcastle - attracted a rating bonanza of more than 600,000 viewers in Sydney.

It was the most watched regular season game last year, but Gyngell wants a "10 to 20 per cent" increase on that.

"I'm expecting very big ratings," he said. "Maybe not as big as State of Origin, but near on. Sonny Bill Williams is the most talked about footballer in the world at the moment. That gives us the chance to make it 10 to 20 per cent higher than last year, which would be about 800,000 viewers. Origin is about 1.2 million, and a normal Friday night game is about 400,000."

JWH gave away 2 penalties and made 2 errors and one missed tackle in close to 60 mins. In his favour his tackle count was quite good (37). I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but at thi stage of his career it would be nice to see him dominate a bit more.

I think Friend's contribution is a reflection of the lack of another solid 'bookend' up front. He took on way too much front on work. Hopefully for the Roosters, their forward workrates and combinations will start to gel in the coming weeks. Friend is still a match winner if his fowards create the room.

The problem for Souths now is that they set a bench mark and they will be playing every side into form. You have to be very good and consistent to keep that up all season.

any thoughts on what changes will be made for round two? i'd imagine cordner and LOD will come in not sure who for though i'm assuming arona will be out.

Arona & moa. Selluini in for morts. That's how the side should be anyway. Ram man moa was ineffective the other nite. We missed cordner big time. Gee I hope he is good to go this week.

Gee, I wish Maguire had thought of that. He would have told us to lose.

moa and the most metres of our forwards i can't see him missing out. seluni is still injured isn't he? kennedy looked a step slow lacking match fitness and dropped a couple of balls i reckon he could miss out

LOL. no, but i'm sure he told then that one game does not make your season and that they will have sides putting in that extra effort knowng they play the Bunnies.

I'm really looking forward to Cordner playing. He really impressed me last year.

Seluini played for Newtown on the weekend. Scored a try. He needs to be in the side. Need a live wire hooker off the bench.

We'd be a better team with a hooker rotation of Seluini and Mortimer

I've said it for years. Problem with our attack is the service from dummy half!

yeah neither of those two are the greatest defenders though. seluni off the bench would be better though

I actually think Mortimer is a good defender. Haven't seen enough of Seluini to comment with confidence

I'll say it again. Our hooker has been a big problem for years!

mortimer on the edge is good. he'll get speed bumped. i rate friend just my opinion. he can have shockers though.

Problem with friend is he has to much hanging on after the tackle in his game. He is a penalty giving machine.

Friend has become too much of a workhorse these past couple of years and he seems jaded. I think he's a better player than that but you need a more effective rotation to see that happen.

Seluini is not the answer, extremely poor in the trials to the point where on numberous occassions he was passing the ball to no one and defence non existent.

Friend was great in the trials, Seems the whole team went back to there old habits. More worried about our defence between SKD and RTS

Moa was our best with JWH.

Skd was disappointing for me in all stars game trial game & the other nite. He looks unfit & overweight. Rts had no hope once skd run out of the line.

i don't think he looks overweight, he looks like he has no confidence. You can't blame skd for rts's bad reads too though two of merritt's tries came from rts not trusting his inside man which is a massive sin when palying up and in.

I went to a function at the coogee bay on Friday. Reynolds was there, he said that after the game the other nite, he stayed at the ground till 12.30am winding down & getting stitched up. Then he went home & watched a tape of the game for 2 & a half hours rewinding plays over & over. He didn't go to bed till 4am. Then he got up at 7am & went to a swimming session & post match wind down session. He then was at the function at 1pm. Jake friend was invited to the same fund raiser, he never turned up. Reynolds seemed like a very nice young kid. I wonder if skd had the same post game routine. I don't think Reynolds would been at the star, I reckon he would be at home with his 2 little girls or working out how to improve his game. Wonder if the reason friend didn't turn up is cause he was working even harder the Reynolds on his game??!! Doubt it.

he said they were at the star saturday night sunday would've been a day off. do you do work on your days and nights off?

If I'm behind in it or our business is going shithouse I work night & day. My post was in relation to the kid having bugger all rest, still going through his routine after being opened up the other nite, then getting his arse to a fundraising event in the heart of roosters territory. One that friend didn't make. I'm just saying, that kid seemed committed & he earnt my respect for it. I just hope our players are putting the same effort in behind the scenes. Just aren't assuming cause the media tells them so, that we are going to be contenders.

fair enough. can't fault is commitment at all.

there were SOME good signs for us BUT we must stop the penalties and RTS must work on his sideline defence as thats where most of the points were scored on thursday.

Friend wasnt there. SKD,JWH,TASI,FPN and ARONA, the boys were well behaved and didnt seem to be drinking. JWH and ARONA were both really nice guys and happy to have a chat. TASI said he would be back for round 3 or 4.
