Runciman: I'll Have To Dig Deep

Tuesday 23 October 2012 12:00 PM

St George Illawarra Dragons National Youth Competition team centre Charly Runciman is determined to give it his all when pre-season training commences next month.
The Dragons NYC Player of the Year scored 20 tries during his debut season for the Young Dragons who themselves bowed out at the preliminary final of the competition.

http://www.dragons.com.au/news-display/Runciman-Ill-Have-To-Dig-Deep/%E2%80%9Dhttp://www.dragons.com.au/news-display/Dragons-Den-Mark-Gasnier/65133%22 Dragons Den: Mark Gasnier

The St John’s, Dubbo junior, who is studying his Bachelors of Engineering at the University of Wollongong, was rewarded with his efforts in the guise of a contract extension until at least 2014.
“The season was an eye opening one for me and it’s been one that I will remember,” said Runciman.
“It was disappointing that we couldn’t get through to the final but we will continue to work hard for next year.
“I want to spend a lot more time here with the Club and will continue to work hard to show my commitment.
“It’s given me a lot more security knowing that I have a base to do what I enjoy as well as allowing me to continue my studies.
“I’m back in to the swing of things at university which is a blessing as its keeping me occupied.
“Looking ahead, I’m nervous heading into the next pre-season training and know there is a lot of work to do.
“But I’ll have to continue digging in and give it a good crack to repay my thanks.”

Trials Produce Promise For 2013

Monday 21 January 2013 2:10 PM

http://staticnrl.sportalhosting.com/site/_content/LeadImage/00056027-leadimage.jpg

All four Dragons Junior Representative Rugby League teams produced results of promise for a successful 2013 season when they played trials last weekend.
The St George Harold Matthews (U16’s) team played the North Sydney Bears at TG Milner Field, Marsfield, on Saturday 21 January. As in other trials no official scores were kept, but at trials end there was very little difference between the two teams. Coach Graeme Wynn commented “It was a promising set of trials. A number of players really stood up against the Bears, and deserved their selection in the final squad for 2103, to be announced shortly”.

Action from last weekend's Dragons v Norths Harold Matthews Cup trial

Coach Ben Hornby’s SG Ball (U18’s) Cup squad proved a little too strong for the Bears, and the number of tries scored favoured Saints at the final whistle. However, this was of secondary importance to the performance of individual players, all vying for a spot in the final St George SG Ball Cup squad for 2013. Hornby said “I was pleased with the efforts of all the players – a number of them surprised me today and enhanced their final selection prospects with their performances”.
Also on January 21 the Illawarra Steelers Junior Reps took on their Sydney Roosters counterparts at WIN Jubilee Oval, Kogarah. The Steelers Harold Matthews Cup squad proved to be too strong for the Roosters, leading Co-Coach Adam Bezzina to say ”It was a very difficult decision to leave several players out of our final squad. I couldn’t have asked any more of them, and in any other year several would have been included in our team. If the players play to their potential this year there is no reason why we can’t perform very well in this competition”.
Steelers SG Ball Cup Coach Dean Young echoed Bezzina’s words when he said “All my players tried their hearts out today, as they have throughout the entire pre-season. None of them deserve to be left out, but unfortunately I can only take a limited number into the season proper. I wish all the players who have been a part of this, my first Junior Rep squad (as a coach), all the very best for a successful 2013 and beyond”.

The Steelers SG Ball Cup team has demonstrated determined defence in its two trials to date.

All four squads will play their final trials on Saturday 26 January, Australia day. The St George teams will oppose the Sydney Roosters at WIN Jubilee Oval, Kogarah, at 9.00am and 10.30am, whilst the Junior Steelers take on the strong Parramatta Juniors at Win Stadium #2, Wollongong, at 9.30am and 10.45am.

[h=1]Final Trials Prove To Be Close Affairs[/h]

Monday 28 January 2013 10:50 AM

http://staticnrl.sportalhosting.com/site/_content/LeadImage/00056561-leadimage.jpg

The St George Illawarra Dragons Junior Representative Rugby League teams played their third and final trials on Australia Day, and all four matches were closely contested.

The St George Harold Matthews (U16’s) Cup team scored an equal amount of tries to their Sydney Roosters counterparts when the teams met at WIN Jubilee Oval, Kogarah on Saturday 26 January. In the following match the Dragons SG Ball (U18’s) Cup team was marginally outscored by the Mark Riddell coached Roosters team, but St George Coach Ben Hornby was unconcerned about the final result. “We achieved what we wanted to achieve from our three trials” Hornby told his team post-match. “We tried a few new things, found out what worked and what didn’t, and we can go into the competition proper with a great deal of confidence”.

The Illawarra Steelers Junior Reps were opposed to the traditionally strong Parramatta Eels at WIN Stadium, Wollongong, also on Australia Day, and both trials were as close as the St George v Roosters trials. The Adam Bezzina/Michael Stone coached Harold Matthews Cup team was narrowly outscored by Parramatta, but this trend was reversed when the Dean Young coached SG Ball Cup team scored a points decision over the Eels in the U18’s match. Again the Junior Steelers coaches were pleased with the overall performances of their teams throughout their three trials, and Junior Steelers Manager Steve Nielsen stated “We came though the trials in good shape, and both teams are looking forward to the commencement of the competition rounds in a fortnight’s time”.

Final preparations for the 2013 Junior Representative Rugby League season were reached this week when all four Dragons Junior Rep teams received their playing and dress gear.
On Monday 4 February the St George Harold Matthews (U16’s) and the SG Ball (U18’s) Cup teams were presented with their gear by St George Illawarra Dragons international winger Jason Nightingale. The two Illawarra Steelers teams followed on Wednesday 6 February when Dragons NRL forwards Dan Hunt and Trent Merrin presented the players with their gear prior to training.
Dragons Junior Representative Manager Neil Lovett commented “It’s great to see our NRL Dragons players, former St George and Illawarra Steelers Juniors themselves, continuing the tradition of wishing this year’s crop of outstanding youngsters all the best for their upcoming competition games. It’s also good that the messages from our senior players to the juniors aren’t all about football, but about being better people and having interests outside of Rugby League”.
Round 1 matches will be played on Saturday 9 February when St George play Balmain at WIN Jubilee Oval at 9.30am and 11.00am, and Illawarra take on Manly at WIN Stadium at 4.00pm and 5.30pm.

[h=1]Junior Reps Face Stiff Challenges[/h]

Thursday 14 February 2013 12:10 PM

http://staticnrl.sportalhosting.com/site/_content/LeadImage/00058463-leadimage.jpg

All four St George Junior Representative Rugby League teams face stiff challenges in their Rd 2 competition matches, to be played on Saturday 16 February.
The Illawarra Steelers Harold Matthews (U16’s) Cup team takes on the Sydney Roosters at WIN Stadium at 9.30am, and Co-Coach Adam Bezzina has warned his players that they’ll need to be at their best to defeat the Roosters on Saturday. “The Roosters were competitive with Parramatta throughout their Rd 1 tussle, and are an enthusiastic team” Bezzina said. “We’ll need to match their enthusiasm and out skill them in our plays if we’re to come away with the two competition points”.
http://staticnrl.sportalhosting.com/site/_content/image/00034746-image.jpg

Steelers Harold Matthews Cup forward Isitolo Collier takes the ball up strongly in last week's win over Manly

The Dean Young coached Steelers SG Ball (U18’s) Cup team will also need to be on their game if they are to defeat the Mark Riddell coached Roosters in their 11.000am fixture. Young commented “The Roosters have recruited widely and largely lacked combination in their Rd 1 match last weekend. They’ll be better for the run last week, and we’ll need to be better too if we want to take our first competition points of the season”.
In what promises to be a great day of Rugby League at Belmore Sports Ground this Saturday the St George Harold Matthews Cup team takes on the competition heavyweights Canterbury at 10.00am. This match will be followed by the St George v Bulldogs SG Ball clash at 11.30am, the Dragons v Bulldogs Toyota Cup trial at 1.00pm, and the Illawarra Cutters v Bulldogs NSW Cup trial at 3.00pm.

St George Harold Matthews Cup Coach Graeme Wynn commented today “The Bulldogs are one of the strongest Junior Rep clubs in the League, and both my boys and Ben Hornby’s SG Ball Cup team will need to be at our very best if we are to compete successfully with the Dogs on Saturday at Belmore”.

[h=1]Junior Reps Seek Consistency[/h]

Thursday 21 February 2013 2:06 PM

http://staticnrl.sportalhosting.com/site/_content/LeadImage/00059463-leadimage.jpg

The St George Harold Matthews (U16’s) and SG Ball (U18’s) Cup teams will be opposed to their Manly counterparts on Saturday 23 February at WIN Jubilee Oval at 9.30am and 11.00am, and coaches Graeme Wynn and Ben Hornby will have the same message for their young chargers: “Repeat what you did last week and you’ll give yourselves a chance of victory”. In those matches the Harold Matthews Cup boys were defeated 12-22 by Canterbury Bulldogs, whilst the SG Ball team proved too strong for the Dogs, winning 20-6. Both teams demonstrated a desire to control the ball, to get off their defensive line quickly, and to minimize their errors, and a repeat of these traits will allow both teams to compete to the best of their abilities this Saturday.

The Junior Steelers face strong opposition when they travel to Cabramatta Sports Ground to play the Parramatta Eels, and Steelers coaches Adam Bezzina, Michael Stone and Dean Young will repeat the consistency message. Errors marred last week’s Harold Matthews Cup performance when they lost 8-20 to the Sydney Roosters, whilst the SG Ball team triumphed over the Roosters 20-12. So the same message will go out: “Minimise your errors, defend enthusiastically and run hard and the rest will look after itself”.

[h=1]Illawarra Harold Matts Looking For a Better Start[/h]

Thursday 28 February 2013 3:19 PM

http://staticnrl.sportalhosting.com/site/_content/LeadImage/00060743-leadimage.jpg

Illawarra’s Harold Matthews (U16’s) Cup team will be looking for an improved start to the game when they take on the Newcastle Knights at WIN Stadium this Saturday, 2 March.
The Illawarra youngsters began poorly in last week’s loss to Parramatta, and co-coaches Adam Bezzina and Michael Stone have emphasised to the players the need for a more controlled start when they take on the Knights at 1.30pm. “We didn’t give ourselves a chance to win last week against the Eels – our dropped balls and missed tackles cost us dearly, and we were always trying to play catch-up” Bezzina said today. “We’re a better side than we’ve been able to show to date, and we’re looking to get back on track with a solid performance against Newcastle”.
http://staticnrl.sportalhosting.com/site/_content/image/00035641-image.jpg

In contrast the Illawarra Steelers SG Ball (U18’s) Cup team played what coach Dean Young described as “almost the perfect half of football” when they led Parramatta 14-4 at half time last weekend, only to fold in the second half and run out 14-32 losers. Young stated “I’ll be looking for a more consistent performance across the 70 minutes this week, as well as a better contribution from our replacement players. If we do this we are capable of beating the strong Newcastle side”.
http://staticnrl.sportalhosting.com/site/_content/image/00035642-image.jpg

Tristan Green, St George Harold Matthews Cup front rower, played well against Manly last weekend.

Also on Saturday 2 March the St George Junior Reps take on the Penrith Panthers at WIN Jubilee Oval at 12 noon and 1.30pm. All four teams will be coming off Rd 3 wins, and both matches promise to be a combination of skill and power. Dragons Junior Rep Manager Neil Lovett commented today “Our games against Penrith will be a really good test of just where we are, and how much we’ve improved, under the tutelege of Graeme Wynn (Harold Matthews Cup) and Ben Hornby (SG Ball). Both Penrith teams are undefeated, and entitled to start as favourites, but be prepared for two classic struggles – it certainly won’t be one way traffic”.

The Illawarra Steelers will be keen to bounce into the winner's circle when they take on Newcastle at WIN Stadium today.
Matches between the two steel cities are generally keenly contested and today's games are likely to follow that tradition.
The Steelers lost their S. G. Ball Cup under-18 and Harold Matthews Cup under-16 games to Parramatta in atrocious conditions at New Era Stadium, Cabramatta, last Saturday. Both games were played in torrential rain.
In the Matthews Cup, although the Steelers played some good wet-weather football, the Eels led 14-6 at half-time.
Illawarra could not add to their score in the second half and Parramatta won out 28-6.
Front-rower Luke Chalker scored the Steelers' only try between the posts after a great bust through the Eels' forwards. Fullback Jai Brooker converted.
Illawarra was off to a great start in the S G. Ball with a try to centre Dee-Jay Harris in the fifth minute.
Steelers left winger William Tom scored in the 19th minute after a brilliant cutout pass by halfback Adam Clune.
This gave them an early 8-0 lead.
Five minutes from half-time, centre Euan Aitken scored.

After the conversion by Jackson Hastings, the Steelers led 14-0.
Following an Illawarra error, Parramatta registered their first points of the match with a try right on half-time by second-rower Tyrell Fuimaono.
But Parramatta scored five unanswered tries in the second half to win the game 32-14.
The Steelers' games against Newcastle today kick off at 1.30pm for Matthews Cup and 3pm for Ball Cup.

[h=1]New Challenges For Dragons Junior Reps[/h]

Wednesday 13 March 2013 8:41 AM

http://staticnrl.sportalhosting.com/site/_content/LeadImage/00062814-leadimage.jpg

All four St George Illawarra Dragons Junior Representative Rugby League teams face new challenges in their upcoming Round 6 matches.
The St George Junior Reps face the Newcastle Knights at WIN Jubilee Oval on Saturday 16 March at 12 noon and 1.30pm. Saints Harold Matthews (U16’s) Cup Coach Graeme Wynn is delighted to be playing Newcastle at WIN Jubilee Oval for the first time in many years. “We always seem to draw Newcastle in Newcastle, as we have done for many years. It will be great to play them at home for a change. I know my team, as well as Ben Hornby’s SG Ball (U18’s) side, is really looking forward to the challenge”.
The Illawarra Steelers Junior Reps travel away to TG Millner Field at Marsfield on Saturday 16 March to take on the North Sydney Bears at 12 noon and 1.30pm. Steelers Harold Matthews Cup Co-Coaches Adam Bezzina and Michael Stone have challenged their team to improve their application and consistency throughout the entire match. “We’ve been playing really good footy in parts of all our games, but have been losing concentration at other times” Stone commented. “We have challenged the boys to reduce their error rate in the hope they can produce throughout the entire game the standards of which they are capable of playing”.

Steelers Harold Matthews Cup hooker Jarrad Whitty played strongly last weekend v Cronulla

Dean Young, Illawarra’s SG Ball Cup Coach, has challenged his team to repeat their efforts of their previous game when they defeated Cronulla 24-22 last Saturday at WIN Stadium. “We’re away this week, we’ve got a long travel journey in front of us, so we’ll need to concentrate really hard to overcome the travel, and a competent North Sydney Bears team” Young said today.

Illawarra Steelers SG Ball back rower Abe Atallah hits the ball up strongly in last week's win over Cronulla

Both the St George and Illawarra Harold Matthews Cup teams will need to record victories this weekend to keep their slim Finals chances alive, whilst both SG Ball Cup teams currently sit inside the top eight and require wins to cement their present positions.

[h=1]Holbrook: We Will Improve[/h]

Thursday 14 March 2013 4:20 PM

St George Illawarra Dragon National Youth Competition Head Coach Justin Holbrook believes his team are better prepared ahead of the opening home clash against the Brisbane Broncos at WIN Stadium, Wollongong on Friday.
The Young Dragons were defeated 36-12 by the Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park, Melbourne in the previous round, with Shannon Crook and Sam Coster the sole scorers.
Holbrook admits his team were given a rude wake-up call in the encounter but is pleased with how his players have trained ahead of the home fixture.
"We've been training hard this week and working on the things that we failed to execute against the Storm last weekend," said Holbrook.
"We have a lot of new faces within the team and the match quickly brought them up to speed with what is required at this level.
"The Broncos are traditionally a strong team so the players will have to be ready for whatever is thrown at them.
"We will be playing in front of a home crowd which always helps and it believe it will be a great contest."

[h=1]Flego: Looking To Earn Minutes[/h]

Friday 29 March 2013 8:00 AM

http://staticnrl.sportalhosting.com/site/_content/LeadImage/00065683-leadimage.jpg

St George Illawarra Dragons National Youth Competition second-rower Julian Flego says he is looking to earn himself more playing opportunities ahead of the local derby against the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at Sharks Stadium, Cronulla on Saturday.
The Thirroul junior crossed for his first NYC try in the 42-22 loss to the Canberra Raiders last round, after starting the match on the bench for Head Coach Justin Holbrook’s side.

Flego, 19, says the Young Dragons have gone back to the drawing board and are working hard against their neighbouring rivals and aims to do his part if given the chance “Our start to the season hasn’t been too bad,” said Flego.
“Obviously it’d be good to get a few more wins, but it’s a pretty new group and we just need to gel together.
“We’ll stick together and hopefully find some good form.
“Personally, I’d love to get a few more minutes, but that doesn’t come without work.
“I’ll have to keep working hard at training to earn myself that playing time.
“I thought our performance against the Raiders was alright in patches.
“We were pretty good around the ruck; we just need to limit our mistakes and put some points on the board.
“We’ll get back to training early in the week and work hard.
“That’s the only way to get good results.”

[h=1]Young Dragons Downed In Derby[/h]

The St George Illawarra Dragons National Youth Competition team were defeated 36-24 by the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at Sharks Stadium, Cronulla on Saturday.
The Young Dragons scored five tries in the local derby but it was not enough for the two-points.
Head Coach Justin Holbrook had opted to standby his line-up announced midweek which meant prop Julian Flego bowed out at 18th man.
The Red-and-Whites proved the stronger of the two when play commenced and found themselves seizing the lead seven minutes into the encounter.
Dragons fullback Yaw Kiti Glymin had been the beneficiary of some neat passing on the right edge which allowed the custodian to score first try of the game.
Halfback Shannon Crook converted to make it 6-nil.
However the lead was short-lived with the hosts soon equalising through halfback Jake Walsh converted try ten minutes later.
The Red V continued pressing forward and found themselves reclaiming the lead through centre Charly Runciman four minutes later.
Crook was again on strike to make it 12-6.
Yet the home side equalised four minutes later for the second time in the game through the efforts of hooker Fa’amanu Brown’s try and Walsh’s conversion.
The pair teamed-up a further two times to give the Sharks a 24-12 lead at the break.
Sharks utility Kieron Rollinson extended the host’s lead when second-half play resumed shortly after the break with Walsh converting to make it 30-12.
But the Dragons struck back prior to the hour mark through prop Kem Seru who charged and barged his way over the stripe adjacent to left corner marker.
Dragons prop Wesley Lolo followed suit moments later score his first try wearing the Red V to claw the deficit back to 30-20.
Lolo fired through the home side’s defence to get his second of the evening and get the Red-and-Whites to within a converted try of their hosts.
Unfortunately, Holbrook’s men were undone on the whistle by the pairing of Brown and Walsh, who teamed-up again for the fourth time to gift the Sharks a 36-24 win.
St George Illawarra Dragons: 24. Tries: W Lolo (2), Glymin, Runciman, Seru. Goals: Crook (2/5).
Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks: 36. Tries: Brown (4), Walsh, Rollinson. Goals: Walsh (6/6).

The team was ordinary yesterday, could and probably should have won. Thing is they turned over possession much too easily and gave up some soft tries. When they held onto the ball they looked dangerous. Still, it's a new team, only three regulars from last year and there's a lot of improvement in them. When they learn to have some patience and hold onto the ball they will go alright.

We've got a dangerous left edge developing there with Crook at halfback providing good structure, passing and kicking, Seru scouting out wide and Runciman doing his thing in the centres and Lolo coming off the bench and making an impact.

I was very impressed with both Lolo's.

Sitiveni, he was our centre wasn't he last night ?

The dark guy was very impressive. He could possibly be one to watch as a future Cooper. Quiet thin but very good with his feet.

You're talking about the right centre seemed ok as well, as was the fullback. But as I said, left side players were standouts.

The team is missing Cummins, hopefully he will be back soon for them because he will give the team a huge boost.

Holbrook: More Pride Needed
Wednesday 3 April 2013 3:00 PM

St George Illawarra Dragons National Youth Competition Head Coach Justin Holbrook has called on his side to show more pride in their goal-line defence ahead of the clash against the Newcastle Knights at WIN Jubilee Oval, Kogarah on Sunday.
His words come following the 36-24 defeat by the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at Sharks Stadium, Woolooware on Saturday.

While Holbrook was pleased with the opportunities his charges created with the ball in hand, he says the goal-line defence that allowed Sharks hooker Fa’amanu Brown to score four tries from dummy-half was unacceptable.
Holbrook reserved praise for props Kem Seru and Wesley Lolo, who combined for three of the Young Dragons’ four tries in the local derby.
“I felt that we created a lot of opportunities, and when we had the ball, we looked very dangerous,” said Holbrook.
“The downside was that we just couldn’t defend our try-line.
“They scored four tries from dummy-half, and that’s the game there unfortunately.
“Until we improve our attitude on our try-line, we’re in trouble.
“It’s definitely something we’ll be working on ahead of the game against the Knights at home next Sunday.
“I thought Kem Seru and Wesley Lolo were both great for us against the Sharks.
“Kem’s been outstanding for us every game this season.
“He’s the only forward backing up from last year, and he’s really playing that way.
“He’s been a great leader and he’s getting some big minutes out.
“Wesley Lolo scored two tries and was great for us as well.
“He’s been waiting for an opportunity, and he got it against the Sharks and proved that he deserved the chance.
“We’ve got a lot of blokes playing really well; it’s just a matter of everyone doing their job right across the field.”
