St George Illawarra Dragons National Youth Competition team centre Nathan Green will require minor post-season ankle surgery and has therefore been withdrawn from the Young Kangaroos train-on squad.
The Renown United junior had been part of a 16-man squad, which includes team mate Jack Stockwell, for the upcoming clash against their Young Kiwi counterparts to be played at Dairy Farmers Stadium, Townsville on October 13.

Merrin: Surgery Was Blessing In Disguise

St George Illawarra Dragons prop Trent Merrin is maximising his time away from the field to rehabilitate his ankle ahead of the upcoming pre-season campaign.
The NSW Blues representative underwent post-season surgery to his ankle following the end of last term which ruled him out of mobility for several weeks.
Consequently, the Shellharbour junior was forced to withdraw from the Australia train-on squad for the recent two international fixtures but Merrin concedes it was a “blessing in disguise”.
“I’ve just been trying to get the body sweet and had a post-season operation to my ankle to get it right for next season,” said Merrin.
“Every player dreams of representing their country but having the surgery when I did was a blessing in disguise.
“I know I need the rest to get the body in top shape for what I expect will be a pretty big season next year.
“I want to improve on what I accomplished this season, try and build my game up a bit more, and take it to a higher level on the field.”

Creagh: Rehabilitation Is My Main Focus

Thursday 8 November 2012 8:00 AM

St George Illawarra Dragons second-rower Ben Creagh has revealed that he is currently on target with his rehabilitation to commence full pre-season training soon.
The NSW Blues representative underwent a shoulder arthroscope during the off-season to repair damage to his shoulder sustained last season.

The University of Wollongong junior admits that while the surgery and recovery has sidelined him from commencing full pre-season training, it does have its short-term advantages.

“I was lucky to get out of the beep test the other day which was good,” said Creagh.
“I know the younger guys and the healthy blokes got amongst it but I know I can’t avoid it permanently.
“I’ll have to do it at some stage in the next few weeks.
“I had my shoulder fixed during the off-season and have had plenty of time to let it recover now.
“My short-term goal is all about following my rehabilitation program to try and get it stronger.”
The Red-and-Whites are presently without a captain with early speculation attributing Creagh as the successor to recently retired skipper Ben Hornby.
The second-rower though admits it would be a privilege to lead the team but knows it is ultimately in the hands of head Coach Steve Price to decide.
“There is a bit of talk about who will become captain and while I’ve put my hand up its ultimately up to Steve Price to decide,” said Creagh.
“There is a void in the senior ranks following the departure and retirement of certain players so naturally those who are still here will step-up and lead by example.
“I’m just happy at the moment to be back around here beginning my training and meeting the new faces who have joined the squad.”

St George Illawarra Dragons utility Josh Miller has admitted today that even after making the difficult decision to retire, playing rugby league has been the time of his life.
The Forbes junior based his decision on advice from Dragons medical staff, who warned Miller and his family that after suffering the cumulative effects of multiple concussions in his career, playing the 2013 season was medically unsafe.
"I'm making the decision on the advice of medical staff," Miller said.
"I'm not fit to continue, otherwise I'd play til I was 80; I'd be running around the retirement home trying to play footy.
"But I'm very thankful for my career. I just feel blessed to have had the career I've had and meet the people I've met along the way.
"I've had so many highlights - scoring a double one time - and playing the ANZAC day match at the Dragons was a massive deal for me: playing in Ben Hornby's milestone game, playing in front of a crowd like that.
"I don't take a day of it for granted - it's been the time of my life."
Dragons Coach Steve Price praised Miller's contribution to St George Illawarra over his twelve months at the Red V.
"He's done a hell of a lot of good things for our footy club," Price said.
"One thing I can guarantee is that every player who's played with Josh Miller would say he's the kind of player you want alongside you."
"It's sad but we have to be upfront. We have a duty of care and responsibility for our players and deep down we really care about our players and our men.
"Whatever he does in future he'll be a great asset."

Miller plans to launch his new venture sooner rather than later, opening the Dragonfit gym at Wollongong TAFE after Christmas with teammate Matt Cooper.
Dragons medical staff confirmed on Friday that their advice to Miller was based on a series of scans and neurological testing, and that the retiring forward would remain in contact with the club for ongoing management.
"I can't thank Pricey (Steve Price) enough," Miller said.
"I want to thank the Dragons for everything they've done: sending me away to get the tests, to make sure I wasn't going to hurt myself.
"They just took every means necessary to make sure I was alright which I'm very thankful for."

Good to see the club is looking after him but saying all that stuff about duty of care with Miller really makes one wonder why the club let Young play the next week after getting a concussion...

I remember a poster commenting about his multiple concussions could have a affect on his longevity

I'm not disputing that, I think the club's stance on this has been quite sensible. However, I think bringing Young back the next week after concussion needed to be questioned.

There was alot of hype for his swansong. Peer pressure so to speak i would guess swung that decision.

In hindsight it's all fine but yes, it could have bit them if he wasn't right to come back and copped another one or had complications.

ST GEORGE Illawarra rising star Kyle Stanley has been taken for scans amid fears the rookie earmarked to wear the famous Red V no.6 has torn his anterior cruciate ligament again.

The news would be a shattering blow for the Dragons star-in-the-making, with the club pinning a major part of its attack for next season on the gifted 21-year-old.

Stanley has already undergone three knee reconstructions, the latest on his right knee last July after having had two previous rounds of major surgery on his left knee.

Wasn't it not all that long ago Matt Bowen was seemingly going through an injury prone phase and suffered a serious knee injury that he would never come back from? I hope for his sake that Kyle can do something similar...but...the patience is starting to wear a little too thin with all these injuries he keeps getting
cpr_89

It's not just one serious knee injury, though. He has already had three knee reconstructions and it now could be a fourth...all at age 21. Fingers crossed it's not too serious.

Meanwhile, Dragons prop Michael Weyman is eyeing a round-one return from a season-ending knee injury. Weyman had just worked himself back into the representative frame before his knee gave way in round 10 last season.

Weyman has been dogged by a chronic groin injury for the last three seasons, which coincided with his dumping from the representative scene, but after an impressive start to last season, found himself on the cusp of NSW selection. That is when his knee gave way.

On a cold night at the foot of the mountains against Penrith, Weyman was taken from the field after suffering a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament tear. ''It always helps to have your name tossed up for [Origin],'' Weyman said. ''That's just footy - you've got to move on and roll with the punches I guess.''
The 28-year-old, who has his sights set on a return to the paddock against the Rabbitohs in the annual Charity Shield clash on February 22, treated the injury as a blessing in disguise. The debilitating injury came just two weeks after the birth of his first child, daughter Lila, giving the former Canberra prop a lot more time to spend at home with his young family.

''I was lucky in a way that my daughter was only two weeks old when I did my knee,'' Weyman said.
''That helped a lot. You see your best mates every week go out there and do their best. You just wish you were out there. I'm back running again. I'm not far off full running and training. It's just one of those things you have to take slow. I hope to be back by [round one]. I'd love to get a trial under my belt, Charity Shield if all comes to plan.''
