Rabbitohs forward Sam Burgess has had surgery this week to repair damage to his shoulder suffered in England’s Four Nations clash with Papua New Guinea in November.

Burgess’ shoulder was not healing as quickly as expected, so he went in for shoulder surgery yesterday to repair the damage.

Burgess will commence rehabilitation training in four weeks and will be available to start the 2011 season for the Rabbitohs.

Slow surgery recovery puts Burgess in doubt for season opener

SOUTH SYDNEY'S English import Sam Burgess admits he is battling to be fit for the start of the NRL season after recent shoulder surgery.

Burgess, who injured his shoulder in England's Four Nations encounter against Papua New Guinea last month, says his recovery had been slow, putting an appearance in the first round against Sydney Roosters in jeopardy.
Burgess will miss the Rabbitohs' trial matches and he said his chances of playing against last season's grand-finalists were touch and go. ''It's right on the deadline,'' Burgess said. ''I think I'm going to make it but we'll just have to see how it goes. Everything's on track, but the first four weeks, it just felt like it was going really slow. I'm just not able to do much at the minute.''

It was originally thought Burgess would not need surgery after injuring his shoulder at Eden Park, but the joint did not heal as well as expected. The delay might cost the Rabbitohs their star against the Roosters.
Souths officials have described Burgess as a 50-50 prospect for the season-opener, dampening their spirits slightly after they recently registered Greg Inglis following the protracted negotiations over third-party agreements.
The loss of Burgess for any period will be a blow to the club, after their prized signing this year produced a wonderful season.
That said, the Rabbitohs are likely to have more forward depth next year than they did in 2010. Ben Ross is set to make his return from long-term neck problems, while coach John Lang is likely to move Shannon McPherson into the front row.
Even without Burgess, a forward rotation that includes Roy Asotasi, Luke Stuart, Ben Ross, David Taylor, Eddy Pettybourne and Michael Crocker - the last making only rare appearances in 2010 - will give the Rabbitohs a menacing pack.

Inglis, meanwhile, will train next Tuesday with his new teammates for the first time since the wrangling over his contract ended. Burgess said of the signing: ''Obviously it's going to be great for Souths. It's sad to see Champ [Beau Champion, who was released to Storm to allow Inglis to sign] go, but it's going to be great for the club.''

Inglis is to be in full training Feb and Burgess March - however it seems that both will be at training in January - though not doing all the training.

MAROUBRA Beach Surf Club became a makeshift casualty ward yesterday as bruised Bunnies' players felt the aftershocks of their tough Charity Shield encounter against premiers St George Illawarra.

Hard-running back-rower Eddy Pettybourne led a battalion of sick and sorry Souths players after the first intense hitout of the new league season.

"It was the first game back and there were a few knocks and bruises. We're sore today but we'll be right," said Pettybourne, whose fearless charges into the Dragons lineup was one of the few highlights for Rabbitohs fans in the 32-10 defeat.
Souths fans will have to be patient, with club physio Errol Alcott yesterday confirming prized signing Greg Inglis, star import Sam Burgess, New Zealand Test player Issac Luke and veteran forwards Michael Crocker and Luke Stuart will not feature in the Rabbitohs' next trial - against Gold Coast in Coffs Harbour on Saturday night.

It means the star quartet will enter the NRL opener against fierce rivals the Roosters on March 11 with no trials under their belts.

The good news is that All Stars players Nathan Merritt and Dave Taylor - along with big winger Fetuli Talanoa - will be back to bolster the red and green ranks this weekend.

Even though Souths have only one trial remaining - every other club has two trials - coach John Lang is confident his highly-rated side - listed as $8 premiership chances with TAB Sportsbet - can iron out their chinks and make an early impact.

"Obviously the number of guys we've got out at the moment is not ideal, and our set-up with three trials is not ideal," Lang said.

"Saints went and ruined it for us by winning the comp last year, they're going off to the World Club Challenge and we had to bring our trial forward by two weeks.

"But in the end those [injured] guys wouldn't have been right anyway for the trials. We just have to make the best of the situation. Hopefully they'll be ready to go, but if they're not they're not."

Alcott said he was confident Inglis and Burgess were on track for round one. He said Inglis would start ball skills this week.

Another misleading headline from the Telecrap. Its a contact sport, players need to ice their bodies after a game. What will they report next, South Sydney players illegally applying liniment to their bodies before games.

The luck Geddes has had with injuries is unheard of. I can recall him suffering 2 season ending injuries in the Charity Shield.

Now he is ruled out after Round 1. This is after he got ruled out for the rest of the year in round 12 last year.

Poor bloke.
