Roosters to win World Club C’ship 20 – nil against a weakened Wigan
Wigan have lost 3 big guns in champion fullback Sam Tomkins (replaced by ex Cowboy Matt Bowen), and internationals Lee Mossop and Pat Richards. Also Harrison Hansen is a big loss but they have signed the talented John Bateman.
Also the highly promising 22 year old hooker Sam Powell will miss the WCC against Sydney Roosters on Saturday after sustaining an ankle injury in training. Make no mistake he is a major loss as I do not rate his replacement Mike McIlorum who missed 72 tackles, the second worst in SL and he was only 7th in runs from dummy half.
Tomkins and Richards scored 39 tries for Wigan last season and put together a total of 203 points which include 101 goals and a field goal, they have left a gaping hole.
The Warriors starting pivot is Aussie Blake Green, who is the team’s leader in try assists, but was only a fringe NRL player, while their two big recruits Matt Bowen and Eddy Pettybourne were both unable to gain an NRL contract for 2014.
This is still a class team and very well prepared by Shaun Wane, but they looked fortunate to win both the Super League Grand Final and the Challenge Cup in 2013 and this will be their toughest test to date.
Josh Charnley, recovering from a hernia operation, scored 34 tries last season but he will find the Roosters defence not so easy to breach. He missed Wigan’s SL opening game on Feb 7, but is a certain starter against the Roosters and will come in for Iain Thornley.
The Warriors finished third in SL for most tries (159) but first for try assists (129) and line breaks (210). Interesting stat that they were only 9th for runs from dummy half and an amazing last (14th) for off loads, a stat you would think they would require to promote second phase play to trouble the Roosters.
Wigan have a match hardened fitness edge having played already in round one of the Super League and a trial match in NZ last week, but the Roosters have a massive advantage playing at home and I believe the UK Warriors will struggle to score a point against the best defence in the NRL.
The Roosters kept six teams to nil in 2013, the greatest defensive achievement in the club’s history.
