Valleys Diehards Heritage Project!

DIEHARD

DIEHARD

Hi Rugby League supporters

As some of you may already be aware a Diehards Heriate Project has been set up to collect and protect as much VFC history as possible and present it to the word via the http://www.ValleysDiehards.com website.

It has been a year in the making and was launched at the last Valleys Reunion last month.

I've made this thread so updates on the latest news and content can be posted.

Have a look and enjoy!

Good old Valleys forever!

Jeez...that was a great read!!!...I hated Valleys way back then, but I would love to see them back in the Q Cup.Great story about Gerry Fitzpatrick...what a great player he was!!,and also seeing my second cousin Russell Hughes in an Easts jersey....I would have loved it if he had played for Easts instead of the enemy.
Great stuff mate...keep them coming....this sort of stuff belongs in the RL Museum at Moore Park, but sadly it is mostly NSW stuff on show.

Second cousin Leanne was a good sort in her day!! Good story about John McCabe...he was a great second rower who I thought would play for Australia but there was a lot of competition at that time.Is he the older brother of Paul McCabe who played for Norths Brisbane,Manly,Roosters ?

Yes he is.

Why doesn't/hasn't the QRL been proactive with this sort of stuff? As much as it is easy to blame the southeners, part of the blame for the lack of respect of BRL/QRL history must lay at the feet of the inactive QRL!

My dream is to have a QLD Rugby League Heritage Centre. But for now we have to all we can to collect, collate, track and promote the history.

I forgot to add,but Gerry put one the greatest tackles you would ever see.In an interstate game in the early 70s,Gerry up-ended Bob O'Rielly and sent him face first into the Lang Park turf...it didn't stop NSW winning the game(I think?) but it let Bob O'Rielly know that Gerry was no slouch as a player. After years of watching O'Rielly playing until he retired ,i cannot recall any other player up-ending him like Gerry did.A classic tackle that would win any "tackle of the year award".

There really needs to be a QLD Rugby League Hall of Fame/Museum for Rugby League!! I have quite a bit of old BRL items that I would happily donate!

Queensland sport in general is very ordinary in commemorating its history. Neither of the two major sports venues the Gabba and Lang Park have any public museum to my knowledge. The major grounds in just about every other State have something significant.

I believe that there has been talk of doing this at the QRL level but there's the usual funding questions that have stalled progress on it.

I know I'd find it very depressing, but I'd love to know what actually happened to Valleys. Where was their club house? Is it still there but owned by someone else? You talk about history lost due to liquidators. When was that? After Brothers-Valleys or before then?

Sorry I am too young to have known what was going on. My parents grew up in NSW so unfortunately they thought very little of the BRL. I on the other hand think it's f-ed what happened to the local comp.

Brothers and Valleys need to come back to the Q Cup. Brothers seem half way likely at the moment. I'd love to know where most of their history went too.

Valleys played at Neumann Oval which is now the Allan Border Field at Albion, home of Queensland Cricket.

I'm pretty sure the main cricket field is where the football oval was, just enlarged. The Cricket offices are I think where the clubhouse was, I assume they probably used the shell of the old building as part of their facilities.

The liquidation sale would have been some time before the Brothers Valleys era. Realistically, I don't think we will ever see either Valleys or Brothers in a major competition again.

Brothers might field a QCup team to try and justify NRL inclusion. Whether it lasts long term is another story though.

If you read the story from a few weeks back, there is nobody connected with Brothers involved in the supposed NRL bid. It was just some big mouth getting publicity about something that isn't happening. Typical media.

The quotes from Brothers people supporting the idea were drawn from questioning them as to whether they liked the idea of a combined Brothers team in the NRL. Obviously, they would, but none of them had anything to do with it.

Huh. Disappointing.
