Parramatta Legend Ron Boden

Hi there folks, just wondering if any of you RL history buffs out there would happen to know where former test and Parramatta player Ron Boden played before coming up to Toowoomba in 1958 - all I have been able to find so far is that was somewhere in western NSW?

Don't need to know which exact club it was, just which town/city he was originally graded with? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As a Parramatta historian I can only find the following -

Toowoomba centre, originally from Western NSW, played for Queensland against NZ in 1959 before touring with the 1959-60 Kangaroos. Boden appeared in 13 matches on tour (no Tests) and was signed by P’matta on his return. He represented NSW in his first season in Sydney and partnered Reg Gasnier in three Tests against France. A nuggetty type and a sound defender, Boden was selected in Australia's World Cup squad in 1960 but although Australia’s campaign in France was unsuccessful, he played in a 'Rest of the World' team against Great Britain at the end of the series. He was P’matta captain-coach in 1961.

Even my book, Parramatta - Quest for Glory published in 1986, does not say where abouts in western NSW Ron Boden is from. Do you know my website has over 1,000 pictures and I have never found a Ron Boden picture.

Hey that's a cool website Slip - I may need further info from you on other Parra players in the future, so don't go too far away...

Yes, finding the relevant information on Ron Boden has been quite a difficult task thus far...

Hi, I just saw this response to my original listing - any help you could give me would be very greatly appreciated!

I am after a detailed list of his playing career (i.e clubs that he played for and the years that he played there).

If you could help me with that, please let me know.

Cheers

Hello everyone,
I'm happy to say that Ron Boden is alive and well and can go 100 yards in ten seconds (in a golf car)! In fact, Ron Boden is my grandfather and is sitting next to me right now! Originally coming from Coonamble, NSW then heading to Toowoomba to play under the great Duncan Thompson and played with Valleys with Toowoomba then representing Queensland for many years. He was in a winning Queensland side in the state matches for selection to go to England in the 1959 Kangaroo's side. He was picked as a centre (centres in order were Gasiner, Wells, Boden (3) and Riley as 4) when they came back to Australia after the tour, Boden was selected to player coach in 1961. When he finished his career with Parramatta in 1967, he went bush to coach Canowindra in Western NSW. Then after two years, he went back to Taree and coached Taree United for three years and won two premierships and then non-playing coach for North Coast when they beat England.
Happy to answer any questions.

Hi Hayesie, thanks heaps for the response! Great to hear he gets out and on to the course still! I would love to have a chat to Ron about his times in footy at some stage, but even if you could answer a few questions I have, that'd be great?!

What year was he graded with Coonamble?
2. So his career years would be as follows:
? - 1957 - Coonamble
1958-59 - Toowoomba
1960-63 - Parramatta
1964-65 - Canowindra (as player/coach)
1966-68 - Taree (as player/coach)
1969 - ? Northcoast (as non-playing coach)
Is that right?
3. I notice you said BACK to Taree - was he with them at some point earlier?
4. I have record of him playing mainly in teh centres, but occasionally wing and five-eigth; I also understand he was graded as a half-back? Did he play in any other positions in his senior days, and did he have a preference?
