Fans to test run Titans\' stadium
In less than a week the Gold Coast will know if its field of dreams can cope with a big crowd.
More than 16,000 people have signed up for tickets to the official open day at Skilled Park on Sunday which will give them the opportunity to tour the facilities at the Gold Coast Titans\' new home.
The event will be part of a bumper weekend of sport on the Gold Coast, which will include an AFL pre-season match between the Brisbane Lions and Essendon at Carrara stadium on Saturday night.
A crowd of 20,000 is expected to descend on Skilled Park for the open day and fans are urged to catch public transport because there is no onsite car parking.
The decision not to have car parks at the venue has angered some community leaders who believe it could take up to three hours to leave the stadium.
A study released last year indicated 4000 people an hour could be relocated from the stadium by rail and another 4000 an hour by bus.
Sports Minister Judy Spence said the open day would double as an opportunity for officials to give the stadium a game day-like run-through before the season starts.
"This is a great way to test out the systems and we thank in advance Gold Coasters for their willingness to help us in this way," she said.
"Those attending People\'s Day will play an important role in commissioning the stadium, as we put the Queensland Government\'s Skilled Park through its paces."
Ms Spence reminded ticket holders that public transport was the most suitable way of reaching the stadium.
"Fans coming to People\'s Day just need to show their event ticket as they board the bus or train to travel free to Skilled Park," she said.
Despite the stadium having a capacity of 27,000 people, only 20,000 will be allowed in on Sunday.
