2013 teams, the gains, losses and re-signings

TerryG

Now that James Maloney is leaving to join the Roosters (family reasons) and Lewis Brown is heading to Penrith (better options), it might be time to consider the 2013 teams.

http://www.zerotackle.com.au/rugby-league/nrl/players/thomas-leuluai/ Thomas Leuluai is the only confirmed gain so far for 2013 excluding those who might progress from the Warriors NYC.

Off contract this year are: http://www.zerotackle.com.au/rugby-league/nrl/players/steve-rapira/ Steve Rapira , http://www.zerotackle.com.au/rugby-league/nrl/players/carlos-tuimavave/ Carlos Tuimavave , http://www.zerotackle.com.au/rugby-league/nrl/players/dylan-collier/ Dylan Collier , http://www.zerotackle.com.au/rugby-league/nrl/players/micheal-luck/ Micheal Luck , http://www.zerotackle.com.au/rugby-league/nrl/players/russell-packer/ Russell Packer , http://www.zerotackle.com.au/rugby-league/nrl/players/jerome-ropati/ Jerome Ropati , http://www.zerotackle.com.au/rugby-league/nrl/players/omar-slaimankhel/ Omar Slaimankhel , http://www.zerotackle.com.au/rugby-league/nrl/players/ukuma-taai/ Ukuma Ta'ai , http://www.zerotackle.com.au/rugby-league/nrl/players/bill-tupou/ Bill Tupou

So who would be your highest priorities to re-sign for 2013?

Shaun Johnson might join the Sevens squad for the 2016 Olympic games.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/international/sevens/7537995/Olympic-sevens-lure-for-Warriors-Johnson

“At the moment it's an interest of mine. I won't lie; it got brought up a couple of weeks ago that it was a possibility. I answered it truthfully. After watching the Olympics of late, seeing all the athletes and what sort of event it is… it's unreal. Sevens is something I've always enjoyed watching. It's another challenge.”

Shaun is definitely multiple-code talented and hopefully there's a Premiership ring the trophy cabinet to go along with any future Olympic medal.

Probably a bit disillusioned as of late. Hope he comes to his senses.

Omar Slaimankhel not re-signed, leaves Warriors to play rugby in Japan.

No shortage of options at fullback with Kevin Locke and Glen Fisiiahi already contracted.

All the best Sly.

Good luck to him. Can't really blame him for taking the money. Was a joy to watch in the Toyota Cup.

Not to worried about him leaving, we still have other options. It would be very hard to say no to that amount of money

Just read this , any thoughts because we need a coach, but I'm not sold on Sheens:

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nrl/nz-warriors-keep-an-eye-on-movement-os-under-fire-wests-tigers-coach-tim-sheens/story-e6frexs9-1226463505397

His position at the Tigers does look a bit shaky. Problem is there are always plenty of rumors about linking player and coaches when this happens. Never know what to believe.

Tim Sheens would probably say yes if you listen to former Kiwi leagie Dean Lonergen who has also served a year on the Warriors board.

But (1) there could be some restriction that the Kangaroos coach (Sheens' other job) has to reside in Australia, (2) Wests-Tigers (Sheens' coaching day job) have under-performed again this year at 10[SUP]th[/SUP] on the ladder and (3) he hasn't built the most impressive team for all of his time there: Benji frequently exercises poor options, Adam Blair is to the Tigs what Inu was to the Warriors – overpaid, under-motivated, reckless and sloppy etc.

Sheens just doesn't seem worth the serious coin Mr Glenn is prepared to throw at the vacancy.

I just hope Glenn includes Melbourne in his travels.

Tim Sheens could work, i can see similarities between the warriors and the 2005 tigers team. Sheens seems to be a bit stale at the tigers so a change could do him good. Only thing would be that he would have to give up the kangaroos job, even if the arlc allowed him to continue with them while living over here the warriors need a coach whose not distracted by outside influences.

Could be worse, we could get Brian Smith or Stephen Kearney.

Personally Sheens appeals for a few reasons which is about attack, but his defense has no real structure hence i believe Blair has struggled badly this year to adjust to that off the cuff footy they play; Blair should of taken our offer last year LOL Sheens has been to the big dance a few times but between big gaps mind you, he could be stale, but he does have supporters within the organisation, maybe after the review we will see a clearer picture if he gets punted to us :S

NZ Warriors to interview Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nrl/nz-warriors-to-interview-wests-tigers-coach-tim-sheens/story-e6frexnr-1226474474470

One of the advantages to hiring Tim Sheens as head coach at Mt Smart is that hopefully this rules out hiring Steven Kearney in any capacity since having the current Kangaroos coach and the current Kiwis coach on the same coaching staff must surely rate as a mutual conflict of of interest.

The smart thing might be to offer only a short term head coach contract to see how they go and keep the pressure on while better options might become available.

Will be interesting if there is any truth in it.

Can't wait to hear the news of some new recruits for winger and centre, well I hope we are getting some.

Yep, me too. Any news of off-season signings will probably come after the appointment of a new Warriors head coach expected in the next few months.

A new coach would usually bring one or two players with them within the first 12 months, although if it's Tim Sheens or the current Raiders assistant coach Justin Morgan that are appointed, it's not clear who – of any value – might follow them to the Warriors.

It's fun to toy with the idea that when Craig Bellamy leaves Melb, that a Billy Slater or a Cooper Cronk calibre player might follow Bellamy to his new team....but at the moment any more of the classy Storm team (we've already signed Dane Nielsen and Todd Lowrie) would be put to good use at Mt Smart.

Tony Iro gave an interview to Radio Live this afternoon. Couple of meetings with M. E. but still no conformation on assistant coaching role. Final decision to be announced next week.

ramraider78

Agree with you there , this thing has been messy from the start, ME wants 2x assistant coaches but nthing has been confirmed and we very soon. Fans aside this upheval is bad for the players , not knowing exactly who is coming in.

We are all still waiting for off season buys but pretty confident we'll know on the 1st November IMO. I've got my wish list but the realistic list sounds more resonable, doubt if we will get marquee players, more like 2nd tier players with no contract for 2013.

Siejka departs Penrith Panthers to join the New Zealand Warriors

The article at http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nrl/siejka-departs-penrith-panthers-to-join-the-new-zealand-warriors/story-e6frexnr-1226527460487
is suggesting “.... he might assume the five-eighth's jersey.”

Wiki profile at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Siejka

So who is winning in the Ivan versus Matt trade-offs? Is Harry Siejka more valuable than Lewis Brown?

Different players honestly. I think Lewis Brown would have offered more to the Warriors than Siejka will. I thought you guys had Tuimavave anyway.

Will be interesting to see what the halves pairing to be now with Johnson, Leuluai, Godinet, Tuimavave and now Seijka

I'd like to see Tuimavave given first shot. He was one of the few who impressed last season in the backline.

The Daily Telegraph are reporting Mt Smart have made a bid for 5/8th Todd Carney.

Possibly a slow news day at the Telegraph....but it is a fun idea.

The Newcastle Herald is reporting Mt Smart have made a bid for Hooker Travis Waddell.

He has 25 games as a run on Hooker and 28 games starting from the bench for the Raiders. Travis seems to be an all-round better performer than Alehana Mara, but Mara plays so few minutes it's difficult to be certain. Matt Elliot could be thinking of life after Nathan Friend and this might also spell the end of the Elijah Taylor at 9 experiment.
