50 years time they will still be finding this, but any illegals removed is a help. Doubt it will greatly change the homicide rate though.

Not quite sure which part this is referring to but in general I think fewer guns in the total population would be safer for both parties.

"Statistically speaking the fact that the trend has not changed is not actually unexpected. I think you've already touched on the reason yourself; gun buy backs don't necessarily mean that the people with guns are now going to be safer,it just reduces the number of firearms. "

The part in bold is from your post.

I have been a member of the Sporting Shooters Association for many years and, even though they are a pro shooter organisation, there have been many articles printed in their magazine supporting the view that more guns were purchased than were scrapped.

Yes, it was a government problem with the price. They just wanted as many firearms back as possible. Never thought it would result in people buying extra.

Can't substantiate the numbers. Just remember reading the reports. May be urban myth. I will look into it.

Looking at the absurdly disproportional statistics regarding gun deaths in the US compared to other countries just makes me shake my head in disbelief. The statistics prove that the American population (as a whole) are the equivalent of a naughty child who has been running wild, causing untold damage with one of their toys and needs to have said toy taken off them. Other kids have learnt to play with their toys so I'm afraid drastic measures are needed for this naughty child until they can learn to play nice again (not holding my breath for either to happen)

The worst US school massacre didn't involve guns.

For how long? no one can predict the future, best thing one can do is be prepared just in case shit does hit the fan like the way you need all the right equipment when a cyclone hits. People need the right equipment just in case the government turns into a Hutu malitia. Power to the people! Viva La Risistance!

What would a no gun situation do? The guy has spent his entire life practicing violence. He’ll get to choose which one he wants to molest or kill. You either own a gun or be a victim.
TheTongue

Guns donīt always link to violence. There R many other countries that have loads of guns like Iceland with 60 guns per 100 inhabitants and 0.5 violent deaths per 100 inhabitants or even Yemen with 55 guns per 100 inhabitants and two violent deaths per 100 inhabitants. Just for comparison the US has approximately 89 guns per 100 inhabitants and 6.2 violent deaths per 100 inhabitants while Brazil has 8 guns per 100 inhabitants and 29.6 violent deaths/100 inhabitants.

Is there a point to that comment?

He's advocating bomb control.

Not, what he said is actually incorrect. He said:

There are 88.8 privately owned guns per 100 people but that is because many gun owners have multiple firearms.

The percentage of Americans who actually own a firearm is lower. The last I read was 45% of Americans own a firearm but I've seen estimates that range between 39-50%.

That is a very important distinction in this matter. Total guns divided by total population is not equivalent to total ownership percentage.

Guns are designed to kill. The javelin and bow were designed to kill too. Ban them from the Olympics.

Do you agree that it's a mental health issue?

and why are Australians different to the yanks in terms of "own a gun...must shoot someone with it" ?

For that matter...not just Australians. Most free world countries seem to have a gun mentality similar to ours. In your wiki link earlier the yanks were one of only a few countries who haven't been war torn or lived under oppressive governments that rated so high.

Wtf is their problem....other than the smug arrogant self opinionated demeanour they have carried their selves for years with?
professional

Terming it a mental health problem is wrong but it is definitely a cultural issue. The general view of Americans towards firearms is bizarre.
MrFourex

MrFourex

It is a mental health issue when America has so many scumbags going bat shit crazy committing mass murders

and whether they are using a gun or not ....is beside the point.
professional

professional

Nah its not. It is a problem but it isn't a mental health problem. A mental health problem is actually a pattern of unusual psychological issues, the US doesn't necessarily have more of those than any other country.

Judging the overall mental health of a country based on a handful of incidents shows nothing. You are talking about a sample size of the order of 10 in a country of hundreds of millions, the number of massacres is statistically insignificant as far as showing mental health issues in the US.
MrFourex

MrFourex

and the number of serial killers as well?

The number of looneys living in a hole in the ground armed to the teeth waiting for the world to end ????

and..and ...and

They have mental health problems....across the board.

Stop talking out your arse.

Well seeing as neither of us actually have specialist knowledge in mental health issues I'm interested in how you're so certain of this.

We're both talking about stuff that neither of us fully grasp but at least I'm not making sweeping generalisations about a country of 300 million people based on the behaviour of a few thousand people (at most). The number of serial killers, religious nuts and separatist factions in the US is a very small portion of a very large and diverse population. Judging a country based on a tiny minority is ridiculous.

The only one talking shit here is you. You have no expertise in this field, you seem to have a very limited and bigoted knowledge of the US and your opinion of the whole country and the minorities who live in it seems to have been taken directly from the 6 o'clock news or Youtube.

Leave talk of mental health issues to those who have more qualifications than high school science.
