I'm not a fan of him as a person, and would have preferred he went somewhere else, hopefully Bennett can turn him around, time will tell.

The whole sending of pictures via text message was also pretty brutal. Short of domestic violence it is one of the fouler things a player has in a while.

[INDENT] Leilua arrives in Newcastle
Thursday 3 January 2013 4:47 PM

http://staticnrl.sportalhosting.com/site/_content/LeadImage/00055044-leadimage.jpg

The Newcastle Knights have agreed in principle to a contract with Joseph ‘BJ’ Leilua, however are unable to officially contract him until the NRL confirm the salary cap for season 2013.
Leilua meet with Club staff on Thursday, the Knights first day back at training.
“It is great we have BJ as a possible addition to our squad for season 2013,” CEO Matt Gidley said.
“We are frustrated we can’t do anything official with him until the salary cap is confirmed, but we have BJ in our plans and hope to make it official sooner rather than later.”
Meanwhile, the Club have made an offer to Anthony Quinn and are awaiting his reply. Quinn trained with the team for a number of weeks before the Christmas break, and resumed with the team on Thursday.
The Knights were met with a solid conditioning session at Newcastle University for the first day of pre-season training in 2013, with a six week block of training ahead before trial games commence.
The Knights play their first trial match against South Sydney in Coffs Harbour on February 15, before travelling to Tamworth to play Cronulla on February 23.

Quinn returns to the Knights

http://staticnrl.sportalhosting.com/site/_content/LeadImage/00055120-image.jpg

The Newcastle Knights have brought former player Anthony Quinn back to the Club after signing him on a one-year contract for season 2013.

Quinn played 103 games for the Knights between 2002 and 2006 and then played a further 103 games in six seasons with the Melbourne Storm.

“Anthony has played with the Knights before so it is fantastic we can bring him home,” CEO Matt Gidley said of the 29-year old.

“He can play on the wing, in the centres and even in the second row, so his versatility will be a great addition to the team.

“He is very well liked, has a superb work ethic and he is just the type of player we want to have around the Club.”

Quinn, his wife Frances and young daughter Summer, are happy to be back in Newcastle.

“Myself and the family are really pleased to be back in Newcastle and I'm looking forward to playing back where it all began,” Quinn said.

“I want to thank the Knights for the opportunity to return to the Club to play out my career.”

Captain Kurt Gidley has welcomed former teammate back to the Club.

“It is good to have Quinny back,” Gidley said.

“I played a lot of my juniors with him and he has a great attitude.

“He has been part of a successful club in Melbourne and brings with him a lot of experience which I am sure will help us all out."

Wonder what Bennett sees him as. Obviously a depth player but is he considered to be cover for the wings or in the backrow?

Good depth signing, nothing more. Will add plenty of experience to our NSW Cup side.

Newcastle Knights confident of signing Akuila Uate to new deal

http://resources2.news.com.au/images/2013/01/29/1226564/540930-akuila-uate.jpg

NEWCASTLE winger Akuila Uate is poised to become the club's highest-paid player with Knights officials hopeful he will sign a new deal before the NRL season kicks off.

Knights CEO Matt Gidley revealed yesterday he has already tabled an offer with Uate's manager Darryl Mather and doesn't believe the negotiation process will be drawn out.

"We made a really competitive offer late last week and Darryl's response was really positive,'' Gidley said. "I don't think we are too far away to be honest.

"We could come in and draw this out forever but I know Darryl pretty well and we agreed not to let it drag on.

"We are both on the same page as far as that goes.''

Gidley would not be drawn on the possibility Uate could potentially become a target for a Japanese rugby club.

"I haven't seen anything along those lines and to be honest, I'm just worried about putting our best offer forward,'' he said. "It's up to them to weigh up whatever other offers they might have on the table. I can't control that.

"We'll talk again this week and see where it's at. We'd love to have it all done before the season starts.''

Uate, who will earn around $320,000 this season, will command more than $400,000 in 2014 and could even be the NRL's first winger to break the $500,000 barrier with his next contract given the increased salary cap.

That sort of remuneration would make him the highest earning player at the Knights, surpassing the likes of Kurt Gidley, Darius Boyd and Kade Snowden.

Gidley said Uate's worth to the club goes deeper than his match-winning qualities on the field.

"He's an excitement machine who puts bums on seats,'' Gidley said. "He's comfortable here in Newcastle and our offer reflects the way we feel about him. We obviously want him to stay and that's what we are working towards.''

Newcastle Knights’ winger James McManus has extended his stay in the red and blue after signing a three-year deal with the Club on Wednesday. The 27-year old made his NRL/Knights debut in Round 1 of 2007 and has since played 110 games for the Club, scoring 46 tries.
“We are pleased to re-sign James,” CEO Matt Gidley said.
“He is the ultimate professional and sets a high standard at our Club.
“James is a player who is highly respected for the professionalism he displays on and off the field."
“We think James has his best football ahead of him and his consistency has been rewarded with an opportunity to continue to represent our Club.”
The re-signing of McManus follows Akuila Uate re-signing and Travis Waddell and Joseph Leilua both signing with the Club last week. http://www.newcastleknights.com.au/news-display/McManus-signs-on-for-three-more/69849 http://www.newcastleknights.com.au/n...ree-more/69849
