Toka Likiliki recovering well from surgery

http://staticnrl.sportalhosting.com/site/_content/LeadImage/00051685-image.jpg

Newcastle Knights new recruit Toka Likiliki is recovering well from surgery he had on his ankle last week.

“I injured my ankle during the Junior Kiwi’s camp and ended up playing on it which made it worse,” he told newcastleknights.com.au.

“This is my first serious injury but it is feeling really good and the cast will come off in two weeks time.

“After that I will wear a moon boot for a little while and continue to work on my upper body fitness.”

Toka Likiliki is the younger brother of Newcastle Knights utility Siuatonga Likiliki and like his older brother, spent two seasons with the New Zealand Warriors before moving to Newcastle.

“I really like it here, the people are really kind and the boys have welcomed me,” he added.

“My brother Tonga has been away from home for a while now and it is good to be able to bump shoulders with him every day.”

While there were many reasons behind the 19-year-olds decision to join the Knights, he said the Club’s rich traditions and history was a deciding factor.

“There are so many great players who have played here before me and it is an honour to be able to represent this Club,” Likiliki said.

“The opportunity to work under Wayne (Bennett) was another reason.

“He is a coach I have admired since I started playing the game and to have the chance to train and hopefully play under him is huge.”

The Buzz: BJ cries foul over NRL ban

By James Hooper

http://resources3.news.com.au/images/2013/01/12/1226552/704535-bj-leilua.jpg
Newcastle Knights signing BJ Leilua.

THE NRL has walked straight into its first legal minefield of the new year with Newcastle Knights signing BJ Leilua set to appeal his three-week suspension.

After being released by the Sydney Roosters last December, the NRL belatedly announced Leilua was banned from playing for any other club until round four this season.

The punishment was served two months after Leilua was handed a 12-month good behaviour bond and fined $500 for sending lewd text messages of his ex-girlfriend from his iPhone.

Which throws up the question: why did the NRL wait until the Roosters had released Leilua to impose the sanction after the courts had dealt with the matter in October?

Leilua's lawyer, ex-Wests Tigers chairman and NRL power broker David Trodden, will argue the Knights' star has an extremely strong case.

On the football front, Leilua got his first taste of life in Newcastle when he was forced to spend a week temporarily staying under the same roof as supercoach Wayne Bennett while the Knights found him alternative accommodation. He is now living with teammate Kevin Naiqama.

McManus suffers minor setback

http://staticnrl.sportalhosting.com/site/_content/LeadImage/00056093-image.jpg

Newcastle Knights winger James McManus has suffered a minor setback after injuring his left knee during the team’s training session on Saturday.
“At the time I thought it was worse than it is but thank god it is only a small setback and I should be back for the second trial,” McManus told newcastleknights.com.au
“As far as I know Wayne (Bennett) isn’t too bothered if I miss that second trial as well as long as I am right to go by round one.”
While disappointed to have injured himself at this stage of the pre-season, McManus said it puts a fire in his belly for the start of the season.
“Physically I am miles ahead of where I was this time last year so a couple of weeks off should do me some good,” he explained.
“I have been training really well and while it will be disappointing to miss out on the first trial, I was probably only going to play 20 minutes anyway."
The Knights will play their first trial game against the South Sydney Rabbitohs on Sunday February 23 in Tamworth.
“You want to see all the improvements that you have been working on during the pre-season correlate on the field,” he added.
“Everyone is training really well and are looking forward to getting some games under their belts.
“It is that time of the pre-season where it all starts to drag a little bit and you want to get out there and play rather than train.”

[h=2]Danny Buderus out for 6-8 weeks[/h]
Surgery setback for Buderus

Newcastle Knights’ hooker Danny Buderus has today had disc surgery and will be sidelined for six to eight weeks.
Buderus, who has been managing the issue for some time, opted for surgery to ensure the best possible outcome.
“Danny has had a great pre-season so it is obviously disappointing for him to have surgery now,” Performance Director Jeremy Hickmans said.
“With the surgery done, he will rest for the next four weeks and then be in rehab for about four weeks.
“While it means we will be without Danny for the early rounds, we all look forward to getting him back fresh to take on the rest of the season.”

Wow, is Clydesdale or Redman going to step up now?
knitey

knitey

I'm not sure Wata, it will be interesting to see who Bennett plays at Hooker in the trials.

I wouldn't mind if Redman got a go in the trials, would like to see how he goes against the big boys.
cpr_89

I keep hearing about them, would like to see what all the fuss is about.

I think knowing Bennett he'll move Gidley there or maybe even Roberts. Also the possibility of Hilder playing there too.
knitey

knitey

There is also the possibility of playing Travis Waddell.
professional

professional

Gidley is the obvious choice. He will probably play there in 2014 and it would make sense to play him there now.

Bennett has also expressed the opinion that Gidley should play hooker for NSW in the past, so he would consider the idea.
knitey

knitey

Not sure Senor, Gidley is injury prone and Bennett has also stated that he wants him in the halves.

My guess is that Bennett will use Waddell.

Bennett backs Buderus to overcome injury
http://www.theherald.com.au/story/1269123/bennett-backs-buderus-to-overcome-injury/?cs=306 http://www.theherald.com.au/story/12...injury/?cs=306

- Bennett says there's an outside chance Buderus could be gone for only six weeks. The operation will completely fix the problem.
- Waddell will play in the trial against Souths before a decision is made in him.
- Other options are Hilder, Adams and Clydesdale, but Bennett would prefer not to manufacture a hooker by moving anybody out of position.

Yuck.

I know Gidley is penciled in as halfback but Tyrone Roberts is a good young half and showed some promise last year.

Buderus on the mend
http://www.theherald.com.au/story/1279046/buderus-on-the-mend/?cs=306 http://www.theherald.com.au/story/12...e-mend/?cs=306
- Buderus feels like a new man after his successful back surgery.
- He is now at home rehabilitating for a late March or early April return.
- He should return in round four or five.

[h=2]Knights query BJ Leilua ban[/h]
http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/league-news/ban-query-by-knights-20130325-2gqbc.html http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/l...325-2gqbc.html

Newcastle are hoping, but not confident, that Leilua's suspension can be shortened by a week, allowing him to play against Canberra next Sunday.

Leilua will definitely be available the week after against the Dragons, but Matt Gidley is working with the NRL to clarify the ban that they handed down.
Tahu eager to put best foot forward
- Tahu is ready to go wherever Bennett wants him - centre or second row - but he hasn't trained for the second row in pre-season.
- Gidley and Mason will be assessed at training today.
- The Knights are awaiting the results of scans Beau Scott had on his groin on Tuesday.
- Tahu says he was lucky his foot was a four week injury and not a six month injury. He ran at training yesterday.

Tahu off the bench into the second row? I'm nervous.
Last time I saw him launch himself into tackles as a defender was when he played for parra against the Knights. Tried to take some heads off and copped suspension.

[h=1]Injury update after Round 4[/h]

Monday 1 April 2013 10:41 AM

http://staticnrl.sportalhosting.com/site/_content/LeadImage/00066456-leadimage.jpg
Kurt Gidley was the only injury concern from the Knights win over the Canberra Raiders on Sunday night at Hunter Stadium.
Gidley suffered concussion in a tackle on Canberra's Blake Ferguson in the 30th minute and didn't return after the half time break.
The Knights captain will need to pass a CogSports test this week to be available for Round 5 against St George Illawarra on Sunday.
"Kurt has a concussion," coach Wayne Bennett said after the game.
"They will do the CogSports test; he has no history of concussion and if he passes the test he will be clear.
"We don't have any control of that; the game is the one who runs the test."
Meanwhile Bennett said forward Beau Scott, who missed the game due to a groin injury, will undergo surgery this week.
"Beau’s probably going to be out for 10-12 weeks and will probably undergo an operation this week," Bennett said.
"There is an issue with the repair, and there’s also an issue with another part of it that may need to be repaired."
The Knights resume training on Tuesday as they turn their attention to their Round 5 clash against the Dragons at WIN Jubilee Oval on Sunday afternoon.
