Manly go into Defensive mode.

Now the title was just to grab your attention & now that I have it, this is not about the ASADA saga, this is about Manly & their defense.
They've put 3 halves in succession without conceding a single point & whilst I don't want to jump the gun & jinx them, the last time I saw Manly play with more aggression & emphasis in defense than in attack was in 1996 & we all know what happened that year. They went on to win the Minor Premiership & the Premiership with 21 wins & 4 losses. Conceding a miserly 191 points (8.68 ppg). A record (in the limited tackle era), that is unbeaten thus far & one that no club has gotten close to. Also a record that is highly underrated in my opinion.

Since the 2nd half against the Broncos to the match against Newcastle in its entirety, their line has not been broken, but not just that, it hasn't even looked like leaking points.
The way they slide with the ball with each man knowing exactly what his job is & the way each player refuses to let down his inside or outside defender screams of 96. No surprises though I guess as Toovey was the best defensive halfback the game has ever seen & so it's only natural his side (after a full pre-season with him able to fully prepare them), is just as stoic in defense as he was.

Their outside men are timing it perfectly when to rush up & jam in on their opposition. Matai is the most noted improver here as he was always prone to rushing up out of the line looking to put a shot on. Maybe the ban on the shoulder charge has curbed his enthusiasm somewhat. Which is a great thing.

Watmough is another player who has improved his defense. He isn't rushing up out of the line anymore looking to shut down a play, leaving the forward defensive line staggered & vulnerable to adlib attack.

I'm still breaking down some of their plays in defense on video & will post again when I've got more.

It'd be good to hear any other opinions.

I was expecting a ASADA bitch thread. Shame on you Nady

The title was deliberately misleading to lure you into this forum. :)

A thread called Brett would of been enough

Their enthusiasm in defence really stands out.

haha - got my attention, I've actually ignored the thread a couple of times in fear of the news.... to finally let out a 'phew'..

I agree with your post... nice pick up.

That 96 defence was incredible and should be praised more often, that was an incredible year..a great 3 years really... (97 wasn't quite as good as previous 2 though, not just because we lost the GF but you could see the team was coming back to the pack)..

Defence comes down to attitude and it is great to see it this early in the season.. no doubt there will be a lull period in the middle.. I generally find if you start the year well you will finish it well.... generally. It's so important to get off to that good start.

It's their ruthless "pack mentality" that stands out for mine. Chasing down every player, every play, every loose ball. When the attack steps up a notch in skill or in desperation, their defensive attitude goes up with it. Great to see.

Is the stat misleading tho they have played the broncos and a abysmal knights squad ;)

I am not saying the knights are abysmal just that performance was.

It was Costigans fault, he suggested that for 1 game they play like the Dragons.

You can try harder as you still had an attacking structure. Not enough side to side stuff or looking lost in opposition 20

Brisbane & Newcastle played as well as they were allowed to in my opinion. Brisbane had 60% of the ball in the first half. Manly came racing out of the blocks in the 2nd half, both in attack & defence & Brisbane couldn't match it with them. The try that sealed the match came off a pearler of a tackle by DCE, textbook in every regard, forcing the ball loose from Reid. As for Newcastle, who were riding high after a 32 point pasting of the Tigers, Manly wore them down in the first half, suffocating them with every opportunity & blew them off the park in the 2nd.

the refs don't want to ping them for offside for fear of little toov's tanty

Well another shut out. Their 2nd of the season. After 8 halves of footy they've kept a side tryless 6 times & scoreless 5 times. They should be undefeated still, but after watching the game against the Titans, a lesser side would've lost by 20 points or more, so they did well to only go down by 2. And if Killer didn't miss 2 kicks, technically they would've won, 18-16. Ah well.

Sea Budgies defence has been superb so far this season, bloody frustrating when your an opposition fan though.
