Categories of Races
Can anyone explain the different categories of races, for instance a BM70, or Bench mark 90
It all works around the BM rating and the horses individual rating.
Thanks nicki78. Very much appreciated
Its not quite that simple though. A BM 82 and a RB 82 race are quite different. In Rating Band races a RB 82 is the highest rated horse allowed to compete in the race. While in Bench Mark 82 races, the horses rating 82 are allocated the top weight 59kg and those around it are allocated weight around it. 1 rating point generally = 0.5kg. So in our example if your rated 86 you would be allocated 61kg in the BM 82 race. This enables horses rated higher than the BM to still compete. This is advantageous to a trainer who wants to run over lets say 1600m but there is no race for his rating 86 horse at that distance. In the past he would have had no race to run in but now he can choose to race at the distance and accept the extra weight. Similarly a 76 rated horse should be allocated 56 kg being 6 ratings points less than the benchmark. A full explaination of both systems is avilable at: BM system racingnsw website and RB at Racing Victoria website (under trainers toolkit). Hope this helps.
Lilydale_Steve. Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. Cheers
