Flemington Race 7 - Turnbull Stakes
December Draw moral here? I thought At First Sight was a good e/w bet, any idea why they've scratched it? Still on track for the Cups?View all 39 comments
Usually a race where a champ stakes their claim and goes on with in the spring.. Cant see too many champs here apart from potential in December Draw, leaving me with Rekindled Interest. Loved his run at the Valley to beat Whobe. He's a duffer on the wet so it's good to see Flem is still rated a Dead. Nice bet at the odds for mine
Playing God, finally 100% , today is the day
i'm a massive playing god fan but today's the back i get off, just keep losing my dough on him! happy to see him win though.
Backed December Draw
Bart to get his spring campaign under way here....
No-one has mentioned Shamrocker --- surely this is working into his prep and proven Group winner at or round this distance
3rd up + Bart cummings = Precedence e/w thatll do me
Winner, quinella, exacta and tri. Toughed it out, good win.
good work gartman. 1.6 December Draw tattsbet highway robbery. Jeez is bart playing silly buggers or what getting precedence ready for the cups ?
Looked like Arnold barely pushed it
Looked like Arnold barely pushed it
You should have punted today gartman
I agree Epicdays. I'm a fan of shamrocker too. She'll be in the money next start. Needs further I think.
Awesome runs by the first two , Playing God once again came up a little short, not sure what to make of it now, something says stick with it through the carnival for better or worse.
Well, Linton was certainly disappointing in this race. Looks like i have given it the hoodoo by backing it early for the Melbourne Cup. To drop out like it did over 2000m doesn't look good for a 3200m race in 4 weeks! Didn't expect it to win yesterday, but I did expect a good run winding up for the Cup. Maybe they are better off letting it get back a little further, and running on, rather than sitting on the pace. Fingers crossed it was just an off day...............another tough win by Decenber Draw though.
Did anyone else notice the Jockey on Playing God give it a massive slap across the shoulder after the line??
Glass Harmonium 5.50 for a place in the Caulfield Cup looks good to me at the moment
Precedence and Shamrocker are ticking along nicely for the cup. Most others are peaking too soon. Was anyone at the track? They both looked too be carrying a bit of condition. Especially Precedence he didn't look like his usually racing weight. Did anyone else think that?
i think you'll find that Linton pulled up sore .jockey said he wanted to hang, might just need his back or hips realigned ,if he races again could turn it around quick, saying that i won't be on him.
I'm writing this race off as a form guide to the Cups. I know this is usually the form race for the Caufield Cup but there looked to be a big bias favouring horses on the speed there on Sunday and could have made a couple of horses look better than they are. Looking forward to this Saturday's Guineas day tho. Have a couple horses I've got my eye on for the Cups are nominated for the Caulfield stakes. Hope the rain stays away to give us a good and fair track.
Lightning, I was there mate, despite the ridiculous 10.30am start which was complete bullsh!t. He ws probably a little bit heavier than usual but to be honest I thought his run was horrible. He was just about the first horse beaten I thought. To be honest I am probably a bit bias because I have never rated the horse and think if he didn't have 'JB Cummings' beside him in the form guide he would be considered just an average horse. Shamrocker I'm not so sure, I wouldn't say she was carrying much, if any more condition than any of the others. Linton was definitely sore, pulled him up straight after the line basically and looked like he was going to jump off for a moment before he slowly trotted him back. There was an on pace bias, only two horses came from behind in Temple of Boom and Isopach and in the other races hardly anything was making up any ground at all. However I still think it'll be good Cups form because December Draw is the best stayer in the country right now and really won going away and grinded to the line like a horse wanting further.
Well said Molanski! A few weeks ago punters here were singing the praises of December Draw and now it seems that much is being said to discredit the performance of the horse. I guess it is just because of the odds the horse is at now. Well I put my bets on it on the cups a few weeks back so got my odds of $9 and $13 for the two cups. December Draw does look like he needs further and I loved the way he finished off the race even though he fell a sleep at the top of the straight. That is good from a Melbourne Cup perspective - we need to see that a horse can switch off. Some of those other horses such as Precedence and Linton did not fare well - track bias or not. Even with a track bias yoy would hope that they would be going better than that right now. At First Sight is the main danger to December Draw in the Caulfield Cup.
Yeah you could be right Azure, I'd give Linton another chance. Think he might have had one of those days when nothing goes right and I've got little doubt they rode him more forward than usual because of the track bias which obviously didn't suit. I won't sack him yet but it seems pretty obvious now that he needs to be ridden cold. Glass Harmonium ran a pretty big race and could yet be a chance in one of the Cups (what are they aiming it at?). Southern Speed was probably the other run that people were talking about, worked home pretty well but she was really well weighted so probably should have worked home well. I'm not sure what to make of Playing God, just won't quite finish off and looked reasonably fit I thought.
Linton pulled up with a clod of dirt in his throat. Thought Shamrocker was solid and clearly looking for more ground. Ditto Absolutely. December Draw is in a rich vein of form but represents no value at the moment, unless you have already backed him at good odds of course. If he can hold his form he'll be hard to beat though. Lloyd Williams could have his horse peaking at the right time in At First Sight.
Thought efficient got to the line strong, don't think we've seen the last of this bloke yet. In precedence' defence, I think without hindering his opportunity to compete, Absolutely and Rekindled Interest may have annoyed the crup out of him at do or die time, if that makes any sense.
For those thinking about backing Linton in the Melb cup can you see him actually taking his place in the race given the form of some of the other williams horses and last prep Nick williams said that he's a 2000m horse and they won't push him further? I got all over him for the cox plate when betting opened. Agreed with Jamie about precedence, he's shown over the years to not be happy with other horses crowding him, which probably isn't the best thing for a melb cup either! But dont bin him, one day he'll fire.
jamie you might be right but I'm not so sure. I was looking right at him through the binoculars as they turned and he was beaten then, I can assure you of that. He might fire one day, but not against the top liners I don't think. In my opinion he is a B grade stayer. Wouldn't like Linton in the Plate too much, unless they can teach him to race on the pace and find a sprint home. In my opinion his most impressive run so far was his second in the Australia Cup when one of his stablemates when mad as the pacemaker and he flew home, not sure I can see him doing that at the Valley.
I agree jamie regarding efficient, I think the old boy has a few good races in him yet. Of course i love the horse so I'm probably a tad biased. Regarding precedence, have never rated him to be honest, think he's pretty average and if he wasnt trained by cummings he'd probably go around at double the odds he does.
