Bulldog Eastwood eyes comeback

10/02/2011 4:11 PM
Adam Lucius

Imagine how difficult life would be with one thumb in plaster for five weeks.

Now close your eyes and imagine both thumbs in plaster and try to work out how you would get about your everyday business.

Throw in the fact your hands are your livelihood and you begin to understand the nightmare returning Bulldogs forward Greg Eastwood lived over the Christmas-new year period.

The Kiwi international had surgery on both hands while playing for Leeds in the UK Super League but scans ordered by the Dogs revealed the pins had been inserted incorrectly.

So it was back under the knife for a bout of realignment surgery.

"It was a shock. I thought they'd be done properly in England but they weren't," Eastwood told Sportal on Thursday.

"Once I found out I was devastated. But I didn't have much choice but to get it fixed right."

"I had my missus looking after me which made it a bit easier."

"She was a big help. I would have really struggled without her."

"But it was still tough. I couldn't do too much for myself."

Eastwood's life started to get back to some normality when the plaster on his right hand was removed last month.

On February 28 he gets the left one off and then he can seriously start thinking about a comeback, currently pencilled in for round three or four of the premiership.

"I've started back running but there's been no ball work, just fitness," he said.

"Our weights coach reckons it will take three or four weeks to get the strength back in my wrists when the left plaster comes off so I am hoping to be back for round three."

"It will depend on what the scans show up when it's all over with."

Eastwood is into his second stint at the Bulldogs after taking a circuitous route to Belmore on both occasions.

In 2009 he was set to join Leeds before his visa application was rejected, forcing him to hastily sign a one-year deal with the Dogs.

After a stand-out year at Canterbury, the destructive back-rower eventually made it to Leeds for the 2010 season but cut short his stay after struggling to adapt to life in England's north.

He is one of several big name players recruited to Canterbury as the club looks to shake off a disappointing 2010 season.

"They reckon it's because they lost me," Eastwood said with a laugh when asked why he thought the Dogs struggled last year.

"I'm not too sure what went wrong. They had a bit of a down year last year but the club's bought well and all the new guys that have come in are going really well."

"It's exciting to be part of it all. I can see good things happening here."

Ennis in doubt for match against Tigers nemesis

INJURY could deny Michael Ennis a round-one showdown against nemesis Robbie Farah after the Bulldogs hooker underwent minor knee surgery last week.

In what would be a major blow for both rugby league fans and the Bulldogs, the NSW No 9 could miss the opening match against the Tigers after sustaining a knee injury in the All-Stars game.
"My knee pulled up a bit sore after the All-Stars game and they found out that it needed a bit of a clean-up," Ennis said.
"There was a bit of muck floating around so I went in and had a 20-minute operation and it all went well. I haven't run on it yet but I am planning on getting out there this week."
Ennis and Farah enjoy one of rugby league's few remaining rivalries, harbouring a genuine dislike for each other.
The talented pair will again go to war for the NSW No 9 jersey this year, a battle Ennis won in season 2010.
Ennis played down the opening-round game against Farah but said he was desperate to make it out on to the field for the Tigers match.
"It is an important match, no matter who we play," Ennis said.
"We want to get off to a good start to the year and show everyone that we have what it takes. I think I should be right for the game and I am definitely planning on playing. Unless there are complications between now and then, they said I will be fine to play."
Ennis sat out of Friday night's loss and will miss the Bulldogs' final pre-season hit-out next weekend.
"It would have been nice to have a run and start working on some of the combinations," he said.
"But it is far better having an operation like that before the season rather than during it."The NSW hooker claims the Bulldogs will be a far improved side in 2011 after recruiting Trent Hodkinson, Frank Pritchard, Greg Eastwood and Kris Keating.
"There were some real positive signs against the Dragons on Friday night," Ennis said.
"I think Aiden Tolman was excellent, so too were Mickey Paea and Michael Hodgson. Our tight guys were really good and I think Jamal Idris showed that he will be a real handful this year.
"I think Trent Hodkinson will be good for us this year too. He has looked really calm in the games he has played and he looks to be a very good player."
Off-contract at the end of the year, Ennis is being chased by several rival clubs, including the Knights, but is hoping to secure a new deal with the Bulldogs.
"It is something you can't not think about when you have three kids," Ennis said.
"Hopefully, it will all be worked out soon."

Morris nearing return for Bulldogs
INJURED Bulldogs centre Josh Morris is expected to return for his side next week for their Round 8 clash with South Sydney.

Morris tore the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee after he fell awkwardly in the lead-up to Kris Keating’s second half try in their round one win over Wests Tigers.

In need of a win and unable to stake his claims for an Origin recall, Morris says he isn’t too far away.

“Probably two weeks away, Souths we play,” he said of his return.

“I started running last week and will do a few more runs this week and I’m just keen to get back out with the boys.

“Fingers crossed it goes well.”

Morris, who signed a new three year deal with the club at the start of this season said the rehabilitation process has been slow but positive having not been dealt with any setbacks.

I was in a brace for the first few weeks not allowed to straighten it,” said Morris.

“I got the brace off a week and a half ago and did my first run last Friday.

“It went well and my knee didn’t blow up so we’ll look to get a few more intense runs in during this week and hopefully get out with the boys on the field the week after.”

His replacement, Tim Lafai, has been making a home for himself on the left edge turning the heads of many of his team mates including Morris.

Morris said that it is comforting to know that are well equipped should injuries arise.

“Tim’s been doing a great job for us,” said Morris.

“He’s light on his feet and he’s a pretty solid defender so I’ve been happy with how he’s gone and it’s good to see how he’s gone and tested our depth at this stage.”

"GREG Eastwood has played his last game for the Bulldogs this season - and won't take part in Kearney's Four Nations campaign for the Kiwis - after he had surgery to his right wrist on Wednesday.

The big bopper has had ongoing issues with both wrists, and club physio Tony Ayoub told us a late opening with the surgeon had come up. The surgeon was none other than Stuart Myers, the same Randwick specialist who has been overseeing Roy Asotasi's treatment.

Eastwood had been playing with an injured ankle after he rolled it on his two-year-old son Tyde's toy car. "I got out of bed and tripped over Lightning McQueen, the red car out of that movie Cars," Eastwood said. "Tyde now knows to clean up his toys before he goes to bed." In better news for the Bulldogs, Trent Hodkinson will run today in a bid to return from a badly corked calf and remains a chance for the Newcastle clash.

THERE is plenty of speculation about the Dogs and the 2012 coaching gig, but Jim Dymock can at least claim to have filled the mantelpiece with some silverware in his short-lived stint. Dymock has won the Bandaged Bear Cup against the Eels and Reconciliation Cup against the Cowboys. He'll be hoping to add the beyondblue Cup against Newcastle tomorrow night."
