A Test dream over for Bulldog Morris

THE dream of playing a home Test alongside his twin brother was shattered when scans revealed the worst for Bulldogs flyer Josh Morris.

The Bulldogs are resigned to losing their star centre for six weeks after it was confirmed he had fractured an eye socket. To make things worse, five-eighth Ben Roberts is also expected to miss six weeks with ankle ligament damage.
Morris was strongly tipped to win a Test spot alongside brother Brett, who has been in outstanding tryscoring form on St George Illawarra's left wing, after they both toured with the Kangaroos on last year's Four Nations campaign.
Bulldogs coach Kevin Moore yesterday was coming to grips with the loss of his two internationals. Moore must now decide whether to start Blake Green or Ben Barba at No. 6 alongside Brett Kimmorley for next week's match against arch-rivals Parramatta.

However, back-rower David Stagg, who was taken from the field against Brisbane at ANZ Stadium on Friday night with pins and needles in his right arm, is expected to be cleared to face the Eels. Bulldogs physio Tony Ayoub said scans had revealed the worst for both Roberts and Morris.

"Benny is pretty sore and swollen today and he'll have an MRI scan later on," Ayoub said. "I don't think there's a fracture and it's more to do with his ligaments. He's not looking good and is likely to spend time in a boot. As for Josh, he's got a fracture at the back of his eye socket. He couldn't see out of his left eye after the game and went for CT scans at Sutherland. He body-slammed a player on top of himself and copped an elbow. He could be out for at least six weeks."
Roberts and Morris will now miss next month's Test, for New Zealand and Australia respectively. Ayoub said Stagg was cleared of any serious damage and had stretched nerves in his neck. He said the seven-day turnaround for the Parramatta game would only help his cause to play.
Ayoub said forward Mickey Paea could return from a knee injury in time to face the Eels. Moore said he would leave it until Tuesday to decide whether to start Green or the livewire Barba, who is set to sign a new two-year deal with the club.
"Blake Green has been great for us and showed again on Friday what a competent footballer he is," Moore said. "He's a smart footballer, he's good defensively and reads the game well. He showed on Friday he's good with the ball in his hands.
"And Ben Barba can do plenty of things at various stages of the game."
Barba said he would be more than ready to start if Moore called on him and he was happy to stay with the Bulldogs. "We're very close to signing and I'm happy with the way things are going," Barba said. "I couldn't go anywhere else, this is the only place I know. They've put the effort into me and it would be a dog act if I was to get up and leave."
Ben Hannant joins Bulldogs injury toll after undergoing knee surgery
From staff writers
April 26, 2010 Ben Hannant has added to Canterbury-Bankstown's injury woes, with the prop expected to miss at least one month after undergoing knee surgery.

Hannant was injured during the Bulldogs' brutal 36-18 victory over Brisbane on Friday night and may not be fit in time for the opening State Of Origin in Sydney on May 26.

In more bad injury news for the Bulldogs, winger Josh Morris will also undergo surgery after fracturing his eye socket in the same game while Ben Roberts and Yileen Gordon are expected to miss several weeks.

In positive news, David Stagg has been cleared of any serious injury after being stretchered from the field against the Broncos

Bulldogs player Corey Payne is inspiring more young people to go to university. Picture: TIM CLAPIN

INSPIRATION is rarely far from reach at Westfields Sports High School.
But former student and current Canterbury Bulldogs team member Corey Payne visited the school on Friday to help inspire the students to study at university.
Payne brought with him students from around the world who are studying the Masters of Management program at the University of Sydney.
The group is preparing plans for Payne’s scholarship and mentoring program to get more students from southwest Sydney going to university.
“It’s a real world case study for them to work on,” he said. “The ultimate dream is to see more kids from southwest Sydney go to university.”
Westfields principal Roger Davis said former students like Payne were a great source of inspiration.
The school has five former students playing in this year’s soccer World Cup, three are members of the Matildas and four have made the Commonwealth Games athletics team with another three in the training squad.
One academic challenge facing many students is their perceptions of university.
“For the students, many of their parents haven’t been to university and it’s a real step up,” Mr Davis said.
“Sydney Uni attracts students from the affluent suburbs. Their parents went there and that expectation has been built in.”

Bulldogs in the wars

RESPECTED physio Tony Ayoub said the horror injury toll at the Bulldogs was the worst he has come across in his 22 years in rugby league.

The club's woes continued on Friday night with big bopper Jarrad Hickey dislocating his wrist, which will keep him out of action for more than a month.

The Dogs have more than 570 games worth of NRL experience sitting in the casualty ward.

"I keep saying to the fellas that it can't get any worse, then another player will get injured on the weekend," Ayoub said. "This is easily the worst period in terms of injuries I have ever experienced in rugby league.

"I can't recall it being busier."

In the latest developments with the Canterbury injury crisis:

* Blake Green was yesterday still feeling the effects of severe concussion and a neck injury after a high shot from Eels enforcer Fuifui Moimoi;

* Luke Patten will not train all week because of a shoulder cork, which forced him to play with a "dead arm" for most of the match;

* Josh Morris will again meet with a surgeon this week and is experiencing blurred vision after he fractured his eye socket against the Wests Tigers;

* Ben Roberts has had pins inserted into his ankle and will not return until deep into the season;

* Dene Halatau (knee) has just started running, while Ben Hannant (knee) remains on crutches.

In brighter news for the Dogs, Brett Kimmorley and manager George Mimis are expected to meet with officials at the end of this week to decide if the experienced half will push ahead for another season.

Eels half Kris Keating had been linked to Canterbury, but it is understood the Dogs only held talks with the youngster and didn't table an offer.

Dogs lose Ben Roberts for six more weeks
DAVID BENIUK

May 27, 2010 - 1:29PM
****

Canterbury five-eighth Ben Roberts will miss as many as six additional weeks before returning to NRL action from an ankle injury.

Roberts suffered the injury in the round seven win over Brisbane and was expected to miss a month, perhaps returning as early as Sunday's clash with Melbourne at AAMI Park.

"Ben Roberts is still on crutches," Bulldogs coach Kevin Moore told **** on Thursday.

"He actually had a pin put into his ankle and that's still a week or two off coming out.

"After that he's got about four weeks of rehab ahead of him so he's probably still maybe six weeks away."

Blake Green will again wear the No. 6 jersey as Robert's replacement against the Storm.

Prop Ben Hannant is still another week away from returning after a knee injury.

"We've only just started to run him," Moore said.

"With the type of injury he's got, you like to get a week or two of running into him before he plays.

"He's probably a week away."

Bulldogs physio Tony Ayoub, who also looks after the NSW State of Origin side, has given Blues trio Brett Kimmorley, Michael Ennis and Jamal Idris the all-clear for Sunday's game.
