Dogs admit courting Folau but deny deal has been done

Israel Folau has been in the sights of some Canterbury officials since attending last year's Back to Belmore clash against Sydney Roosters, but Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg denies any deal has been done.

Folau's decision to play Super Rugby for the Waratahs after Parramatta were unable to accommodate him in the salary cap sparked a furious reaction from Eels officials who privately believe he will join the Bulldogs next season.

However, Canterbury sources have told Fairfax Media the club had been courting Folau before his decision last October to ask for a release from the final two years of his $1.5 million a season AFL contract with Greater Western Sydney.

Fairfax was told that Folau attended the Back to Belmore clash, which was Canterbury coach Des Hasler's first in charge of the team, and the former Test winger sat in the grandstand several rows behind Roosters chairman Nick Politis.

Canterbury officials were prepared to give Hasler time to re-build the team and believed Folau would return to the NRL before his four-year AFL deal expired.

The Bulldogs have since signed two of Folau's best friends in centre Krisnan Inu and second-rower Tony Williams and there is increasing speculation that he will also be training at the club's Belmore centre of excellence next season.

However, Greenberg denied a deal was imminent with Folau - the first player to play in the top competition in rugby league, Australian rules and rugby union.

''We have not done any type of deal and we have had absolutely no discussions with him or his management,'' Greenberg said.

The Bulldogs have a number of big-name players off contract at the end of the season and some of them would need to make way for Folau if he did come. Among those most likely are New Zealand Test forward Frank Pritchard and prop Aiden Tolman - neither of whom want to leave Canterbury.

The Bulldogs are yet to announce a new deal with five-eighth Josh Reynolds and Fairfax Media has been told he has received big offers from two rival clubs after it appeared the 23-year-old would stay.

It is unlikely Canterbury would be prepared to get into a bidding war over the trio as the club has ready-made replacements for Pritchard and Tolman in Josh Jackson, Dale Finucane and David Klemmer.

Former Manly halfback Trent Hodkinson is also off contract this season and after just one win in four matches by Hasler's men, there is a chance he could be recalled to the top grade for Friday's clash with the Roosters.

Concerns about Ben Barba's mental state in Friday night's 20-6 loss to Manly appear unfounded. It is understood he went into the match carrying an ankle injury sustained at training last week.

After being stood down from playing and training for three weeks while he dealt with off-field problems relating to alcohol, gambling and the break-up of his relationship, Barba is also thought to be lacking in match fitness.

Last year's NRL player of the year sustained a finger injury in the match against the Sea Eagles and underwent X-rays on the weekend.

However, he was cleared of any serious injury and Canterbury officials expect him to be fit for the match against the Roosters at Allianz Stadium.
