what will it look like?

[h=1]Hodkinson dreams of regaining Dogs spot as recovery looms[/h] TRENT HODKINSON is determined to put his injury-riddled season behind him and make a play for a starting halves spot at Canterbury.
Hodkinson declared he would be fit for the start of this season after shoulder and knee operations crippled his previous one, restricting him to six games. He could only watch as the Bulldogs marched towards an unlikely grand-final appearance led by scrumbase pair Josh Reynolds and Kris Keating.

''It was frustrating,'' Hodkinson said. ''I was quite excited to start the season with 'Dessie' [coach Des Hasler] coming over and playing some good footy under him. It was hard and I would have preferred to have been part of it. If I didn't get injured, who knows I might have been able to go all the way with them, but I was very happy for the boys and there was a great vibe around the place.''

Hodkinson, 24, had hoped for a joyous reunion with Hasler, with whom he spent one first-grade season at Manly in 2010. He started last season in the No.7 jersey but his year failed to kick into gear as he struggled to fully recover from off-season surgery on his left knee, which had been reconstructed in 2008. The Cabramatta junior lasted four rounds before injuring the medial ligament in his other knee.

Hodkinson added just 28 more minutes in the top grade via two starts from the bench before he was struck again by injury, needing a partial reconstruction to repair his shoulder, which he dislocated playing the NSW Cup in an attempt to increase his match fitness in July.

''I was coming into the 2012 season not 100 per cent but still able to do everything,'' he said. ''For my knees, the shoulder injury was a blessing in disguise [as it gave] them a rest. In the end the coaching staff just said to call it a year and get me fixed. They are feeling good now and even little things like walking up the stairs at home is not as bad as it was.''

With Reynolds and Keating entrenched in the halves, Hodkinson - off contract at season's end - knows he faces an uphill battle if he is to dislodge the duo before Canterbury's round-one match against North Queensland. His shoulder rehabilitation limits his training but he expects to join the full squad after Christmas and will be fit for the club's first trial against Newtown on February 10.

''It's going to be tough because the boys had a good season,'' Hodkinson said. ''I'm going to have to prove myself again and go into the trials with everything I've got.''

It'll be

6. Reynolds
7. Hodkinson

14. Keating

I'd consider swapping Reynolds and Keating but that won't happen.

i think Hodkinson will need to work his way back into the team as Keating was the starting halfback for much of this year... nevertheless, i do expect Trent and Reynolds at '6' to be the preferred combination by mid season (injuries permitting)

if so, i'm not sure that Keating will be used as a utility off the bench

I don't mind loyalty to players but provided that Hodkinson is fit and has had a few pre-season games I think the Dogs should start with him straight away. Keating is such a limited half and lacks vision and execution.

Ennis isn't going to play 80 (or is he?)...who else is going to step in?

Ennis has been playing the full 80 recently hasn't he?

Ennis has been playing the full 80 minutes of late with Hasler picking 4 running forwards on the bench

i do think Hodkinson is the better option at halfback ahead of Keating but neither will win a GF IMO

I was under the impression that Ennis was playing more like 55-60 as he struggled with injury last season...but you would know better than me!

Certainly played the 80 for the back end of the season. Don't know what was happening earlier in the year.

Romelo played more in the earlier part of the year and was coming on for 10-20 minute stints

Hodko fully fit is easily our first choice half for mine. Hope he's over his injuries and can form a combination with Reynolds because they are both quality young players and will make the Dogs a force again in 2013.

Hodkinson is way better then keating so I hope he is injury free keating won't even see the bench we have halatau who can slot into hooker if ennis needs a breather.

we need someone like hodkinson as he is our only specialist 1/2. Reynolds is a hooker and keating a utility player. we have been able to get away with it so far thanks to haslers training but in the long run it will catch up with us. rumor has it that SAM Williams is coming but that is a rumor at the moment. i hope it is true because that's what we need a specialist 1/2 with some ball skills. hodkinson has yet to prove himself and even though he was injured last year im not sure if he has what it takes in the top grade to take us all the way. with hodkinson or Williams at half we could use keating as utility and back up for Ennis and the 1/2s.
