Source: www.dragons.com.auThe St George Illawarra Dragons today advised that Dean Young will take no further part in the 2007 Telstra Premiership due to injury.
Young, 23, suffered a serious knee injury in Round 25 last year that has had ongoing complications throughout the entire recovery process, including a serious infection after the surgical procedure in October last year.
The Dapto junior made his comeback in Round 8 this year and contributed significantly to the victory over the Panthers, but unfortunately was only able to play three consecutive games before succumbing to further injury to his left knee which requires weeks of complete rest.
With his knee requiring long-term rest, Young in consultation with the coaching and medical staff has taken the opportunity to also fix a minor ongoing left shoulder problem. As a result, Young underwent successful shoulder surgery on Tuesday.
"I certainly haven't had a lot of luck, it is extremely frustrating and disappointing but it is just something that I have to deal with," said Young.
"After resting my knee and shoulder I will be working hard to ensure I have a full pre-season and am ready to go in 2008.
"Whilst I can't contribute on the field, I will continue to stay positive and support the guys each week at training and the games," added Young.
Dragons Coach Nathan Brown acknowledged this news as a further significant setback for both Dean and the Club.
"Deano has certainly had a tough time and it is disappointing for all of us that he hasn't been able to play a lot of footy this year," said Brown.
"He is a special player who contributes significantly to our team and we have certainly missed him.
"However the way he has handled these disappointments has been a real testament to his character," added Brown.
"He has remained positive and shown great commitment to his rehab for each of the challenges that have been thrown his way.
"Deano is a great Clubman who has gone out of his way to help other players and the Club wherever possible," said Brown.
"We all know he will do everything possible to be back in full-training as soon as possible in preparation for next year."Young joins Wes Naiqama (Knee) and Brett Morris (Shoulder) who have also been ruled out for the season.
