Last night Wicks was applauded at the Knights 2008 Presentation Night for his efforts during the year in the Newcastle Knights / Coal & Allied Community Alliance.
The Community Alliance is gearing up to complete its first year with a blitz in Singleton on Thursday 4 December.
So far this year the Alliance has reached more than 25,000 people throughout Newcastle and the Hunter Valley with a series of community activities, many in conjunction with major charity partner, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.
Scone was the first regional town to benefit in February with a rugby league afternoon at the home of the Thoroughbreds, followed by a fundraising dinner to benefit Junior Rugby League in the Upper Hunter.
Two Community Alliance blitzes have ensured thousands of children and teenagers have had the opportunity to meet their football heroes and join Knights players in a range of non-football related activities, including drug and alcohol awareness seminars, drumming workshops, and healthy lifestyle information sessions.
Local coaches also benefited from whiteboard sessions with Knights Head Coach, Brian Smith and National Youth Competition Coach, Trent Robinson. The pair conducted courses where local coaches had the opportunity to interact and learn the finer points of the game.
The blitzes also showcased Coal & Allied's Community Trust programme, through interactive activities with programme partners such as The Song Room and Outward Bound.
The Alliance enabled the Newcastle Knights to join Coal & Allied's Indigenous programmes as role models for young students with special rewards for attending school and achieving healthy living goals. Players James McManus, Daniel Tolar and Michael Young committed to the scheme and enjoyed regular contact with students, getting to know them on a personal level.
The annual Muswellbrook Kids to Kangaroos Clinic was one of the most popular programmes. Coal & Allied, the Knights and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service teamed up to transport the region's flagship sporting team to the Upper Hunter where hundreds of budding Knights had the opportunity to join their idols for one-on-one tuition.
From mine site visits with Coal & Allied employees, to lending a helping hand at the Muswellbrook Black Coal Cup Golf Tournament, the Newcastle Knights and Coal & Allied set out to make a difference in 2008 to the people of Newcastle and the Hunter Valley and the environment.
A National Rugby League first, the inaugural 'Green Game' against Parramatta saw a series of environmentally friendly advertisements produced and a major awareness campaign conducted at EnergyAustralia Stadium.
The Community Alliance trailer made sure the Knights and Coal & Allied had a high visibility presence at a number of events throughout the Hunter in 2008, offering thousands of giveaways and educational benefits with more planned for the 2009 season.
2008 events included:
Scone Junior Clinic and Fundraising Dinner
Muswellbrook Show
Maitland Rugby League Blitz
Singleton Rugby League Blitz
Coaching Whiteboard Sessions
Indigenous Programs
Hunter Mine Site Visits
Muswellbrook Kids to Kangaroos Clinic
Black Coal Cup Fundraising Event
Environmental Awareness Promotions
The Green Game
Coal & Allied's General Manager External Relations, Fiona Nicholls, said the Community Alliance was an Australian first as a unique Rugby League sponsorship that had helped make a real difference throughout 2008.
"We have been proud to partner with the Knights to deliver a range of activities designed to help build capacity in communities from the Lower Hunter right up to Scone," Ms Nicholls said.
"Environment, energy efficiency, education and fitness have been among the key initiatives of our work together through this partnership.
"We look forward to an even bigger year in 2009 with more Community Alliance programmes that the community can participate in."

Source: www.newcastleknights.com.auThe Newcastle Knights 2008 playing roster received another boost last night with the signing of former Knights junior and St George Illawarra prop, Danny Wicks.
21-year-old Wicks will become a Novocastrian next season in a three year deal that will see him at EnergyAustralia Stadium until at least the end of 2010.
"I've watched him closely as he's developed under Nathan Brown and the Dragons system," said Knights Coach, Brian Smith.
"He was a powerful young man and he's grown into a powerful unit. He's the sort of player who can take us forward very well in the middle of the ruck.
"For a big bloke he's got genuine speed and I honestly think as he matures as a man and as a footballer he has the opportunity to be one of the game's leading front rowers."Wicks began his playing days as a Grafton Ghosts junior and made his first grade debut for the Dragons in Round 10, 2006 against the Warriors.
His signing continues the Newcastle Knights commitment to recruit players from the club's catchment region and Knights Operations Manager, Stephen Crowe says he expects Wicks to play a long term role at the club.
"Danny fills all the criteria we're looking for. He's a country boy from Grafton, he's young at 21 years of age, he's 110 kilos, athletic and he has NRL experience," Crowe said.
"We hope he'll have a long career at the club and play his best football here."Meanwhile, Knights front rower, Adam Woolnough has accepted a lucrative deal with Penrith and will pursue new opportunities with the 2003 Premiers next season.
Woolnough will remain loyal to the Knights for the remainder of the season, committing to give 100 per cent to his club.
"I'm really pleased for Wooly that he's found a new place to apply his trade," Brian Smith said.
"He's a genuinely nice bloke, I've enjoyed working with Wooly and we've already chatted about what his goal is for the rest of the season here at the Knights.
"I know he wants to go out on the highest possible note which is a mark of the man he is."Woolnough's decision comes with the club's endorsement and the Knights intend to repay his loyalty.
"Wooly has been one of the great ambassadors for our club," Crowe said.
"A kid from Taree, he's come through the junior ranks, played 100 games and he's in our leadership group for a reason. He's a great character as well as a very good player.
"I know he's received a very substantial offer from Penrith and he goes with our very best wishes."News sent by:
